    Oh I don’t doubt it, but I’m intrigued that of 20 surviving Vivaldi operas, the only one that gets Adamo’s interest is the specific production with the Ercole’s nudity. Wasn’t a judgment on the work or composer, but a comment.

    I believe the reason is that he was focusing on a season with mostly borrowed productions for financial and practical feasibility. Notoriety thanks to nudity wouldn’t hurt, either.

    Jatm2063, what on earth can you mean by “faggotty” as a term of opprobrium: particularly on parterre box, a “queer opera ‘zine?” It happens I’ve coached (in college) both Little Women and Lysistrata, and both of them—Lysistrata, especially—are so specifically concerned with (straight) men and women trying to work out their feelings that I was surprised to learn that a gay guy had written them. That our revered La Cieca chose to run a picture of barechested Jim Bobick for her feature doesn’t make Lysistrata a gay opera any more than that YouTube clip of dancing bumblebees makes Un Ballo a cautionary tale of Colony Collapse Syndrome. It’s strange to read how scornfully you use the word “faggotty” a day after nationwide protests of Prop 8: a day on which the moral stature of gayness in America took a giant leap past Stonewall…

    I am going to say at this point that I do admire Adamo’s setting of Little Women. It is one of two new operas I have seen in the last ten years that I would go to see again.
