Well. La Cieca…
I wish I could congratulate ya for a job well done…but I actually feel like crying , a little right now…
VERY sad for a Company that has given so much pleasure, for so long…
An absolute DISASTER from beginning to end. From the moment the clueless Ms. Baker decided she would try to out-Gelb Gelb by bringing in Mortier this has been one of the most badly-handled situations I have ever seen. I knew Mortier would be a disaster for NYCO, but I at least thought he would do ONE season….
FIASCO, is right!
Is it official? If so you cannot imagine the bullet that was dodged/
I hope this is true about pas de Mortier, but can’t he take Mrs Baker back to Paris and put her to work there? She certainly has done less than nothing for the NY opera community.
Good outcome!
Wow, what a disaster for the NYCO. To have this happen during their off-season… it’s hard to imagine how they’ll rebuild their subscriber base and their image.
Brava La Cieca for being on top of it as usual.
One can always count on MrMyster from Santa Fe for a ridiculous comment. To say that this disastrous turn of events is a “good outcome” is beyond inane. I was not a fan of the decision to hire Mortier in the first place but now CITY OPERA is in complete shambles. How does anyone see that as being a good outcome??
Susan Baker should tender her resignation immediately for her vision and execution of what was a foreseeable disaster, as well as for her completely inappropriate refusal to hold him accountable.
Even *I* could see that this was inevitable!
Bravo, LaCieca, for your ace reportage!
I long for the days when City Opera was giving wonderful performances at City Center with modest, imaginative productions. One of the (few)consolations of age is to have heard Sills there (those were her best years) along with many other great singers before the company’s fateful move to the State Theater. I wish they would move back to CC and let NYCB restore Phillip Johnson’s marvelous “silent stage” at the State Theater.
Good riddance to Mortier and may Susan Baker soon follow. This company–if it survives–needs to downsize and seek another venue. A ready-built one.
