who were the winged figures ??????
Angels of death? Doesn’t Herod sing that he hears the wings of the Angels of Death? I’m sure there’s something about Todesengel in the text.
I didn’t think that Uusitalo was that bad. He was just a bit underpowered. He has a nice voice. For me he did have good tension with Mattila and also invoked fear and wonder during his denouncements, albeit being underpowered. Begley conveyed the lecherous sliminess of Herod without overdoing it and seemed to handle the acrobatic role pretty well. Komlosi was adequately blustery in her role as Herodias. Kaiser had a nice lyric voice for Narraboth and painted a believable sympathetic character. As for fear and wonder, Robinson pulled that off really well during his short role. Is it just me or are basses like him really rare? Mattila really seemed to be living that role. Her physical acting and vocal acting really complimented each other. Also she never seemed to tire. I never realized how wide of a singing range prospective Salomes have to sing, but Mattila handled it very well. There were a few times that I thought she was a little bit flat during the final scene. Either that or they seem flat based on my Nilsson benchmark.
Van Dam sang Wozzeck gorgeously but I thought his automaton acting was risible– and this is an artist I admire tremendously.
As a matter of fact, Regina, I do not feel that my judgments are Met-centric. I have attended opera in venues all over the world and I know full well that some wonderful singers are best suited to small houses- the same is true of some works, of course!
