Who says media overexposure isn’t good for the career? Note, for example, how the heavily hyped bass-baritone Erwin Schrott has now made the transition into a dual career as lyric baritone and spinto soprano. And that poor schlub who used to update the blog for Martha Stewart now writes captions for the New York Times!
I thought we decided it was ‘couldn’t care less’ whichever side of the Atlantic one is on.
hmm…..i couldn’t care less!
Billy:
Very nice rerview of the Don. I thought Schrott was quite effective as the Don. As for the lovely Isabel Leanard, I thought she sounded like a soprano too. The beautiful lady is getting married soon (to the barihunk TTR, what a lucky guy).
Polenzani sounds better every day. Who do you think is the best Don Otto these days. Sr. Vargas just sang Don Otto at the Covent Garden (before his HD brodacast with Renee. The ROH started their broadcast too with their new producation of the Don). Anyone heard him? Any comment?
The later run of the Don seems to have a better cast (more experienced). Isabel Bayrakdarian is very easy on the eyes too.
Thanks again for the review.
Stoyanova has been around for awhile, and really is fantastic and underrated.

I believe…correct me if I’m wrong…but that there are Student Tickets availible for just about EVERY performance , at the MET , these days—perhaps barring special events/opening nights/sold-out shows/etc…
The same holds true for the $20. “rush” tickets , for the general audience (week-nights only)
Whatever Gelb’s short-comings may or might-not seem to you, this isn’t one of them…
There are not student tickets for every performance. I have absolutely no idea where you would get that idea from.
From the MET web-site—(OK, as I said—it might not be availible for EVERY SINGLE performance)
Student Discount Tickets
Student Discount Tickets for full time students, age 29 or under, are available at 10 am on the day of the performance (pending availability), and may be purchased at the Metropolitan Opera’s box office. Prices are $25 for weekday performances and $35 for Friday and Saturday performances. A valid student ID and proof of age must be presented at the time of purchase. We are aware that some elementary schools do not provide a student ID. Exceptions will be made when the student is present at the time of purchase. Limit two tickets per performance.
Call Met Ticket Service at 212-362-6000 for current Student Discount Ticket availability.
pending availability is the key phrase.
…and for students that can’t afford that( I haven’t been a student for quite a while, myself—and I would find those prices steep , right now)–there are $15 seats availible in the Family Circle—-
Scifisci obviously has a stick up his ass about Gelb for whatever reason, but he doesn’t know what he’s talking about…the FACTS are that there have been Student Tickets available for EVERY performance so far this season. Last season the only times I was not able to get a Student Ticket were for SOME of the DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT performances, and there was standing room available for those which, as far as I could tell, many students took advantage of.
