What the Met’s opening night was like for those who (unlike your plebian doyenne) enjoy celebrity status.

  • Woking is fine (though don’t brave the train station on a Saturday night): nice if slightly anonymous looking newish theatre. I saw The Last Supper there, a very strange experience. Mitlon Keynes would probably be OK too – same company runs it. Norwich would be best if you wanted to spend a day in an interesting city.

    Thanks!

Is there anything more exciting than a dramatic coloratura soprano? Just saying.

And based on all the recent talk, I feel a vocal ID quiz acomin’. Either of the KdN’s arias would be fun.

Deutekom definitely had the biggest voice that I’ve heard sing KdK, and it was one case where the
gargling vocalizing worked for me…she was no actress, but vocally created something rich and
strange. just in terms of size of voice there was no
contest with Moser, whose voice could be steely and
cut, but was medium weight at best.

Agreed, Graciella! Desptie the gargling coloratura, Deutekom for me is the most amazing QOTN.

NYCOQ (#28) ” I am sure no one came there just to hear Ramon Vargas. But they did come to celebrate Renee.”

FYI I knew a 10 yr old requested to go to the cinema just to hear Ramon Vargas. She could care less that the Gala was for Fleming. There are two opera singers she wants to hear: JDF and Ramon Vargas. Thought Peter Gelb may like to know.

Someone else has been keeping their eye on Leonard – its announced elsewhere on the web she is marrying Teddy Tahu-Rhodes in December. Hope, for his sake, she has more personality offstage than on.
