La Cieca has just heard that Patrick Summers will conduct all performances of Richard Strauss’s Salome at the Met this season, “replacing Mikko Franck, who is ill.”

Say what you will about the guy, but I thought that Gergiev did a terrific job last time. The score sounded almost impressionistic in his hands.

  • Calaf47 says:

…and Mattila was NOT happy with him. End of story.

  • turandot says:

Gergiev had not a clue how to conduct Strauss. Mikko Franck has become fat and can hardly stand up. Sad for a young man. He had promise once but that has disappeared.

Patrick Summers is a middle-of-the-road hack. He won’t have any insights of interest in the score but he will, at the least, not ruin it.

  • Quanto Painy Fakor says:

    Indeed!

  • Josephine says:

Well if you are going to be a hack you might as well be a middle-of-the road hack. Look at what the far-right hacks have done to this country.

Now if you would all excuse me I am going to go and fantasize about Rene Pape. If I am not back by Christmas will someone please take my mother to the mid-night mass?

  • Josephine says:

Salome was never the right project for either Mattila or Gergiev. I suggest they collaborate on a new production of The Sound of Music. She would be a shoe in as Maria Von Trapp and he would bring impressionistic qualities to that score.

OY if its anything like that lackluster Manon Lescaut they did together Houston a few years back…

a friend of mine recently played a concerto with Mikko Franck (who is 29, btw) and commented that his weight has truly ballooned to dangerous levels. Pity, since the Finns have truly been churning out some great talent recently.

On Saturday during the piano stage rehearsal Mattila kept complaining that the tempo was too slow. She was clearly pissed. The clueless “directors” didn’t help matters either. There were three of them, none of them had any clue about how to help the poor girl with simple staging during the 7 veils scene, let alone anything resembling direction. Shameless.

I’m sure she got the conductor fired. No one gets sick like this unless you break a leg or something of the sort. Plus the run is 7 performances, he’d certainly recover for at least some of them. I just wished Mattila could get the directors fired as well.

  • Josephine says:

Well I am one who is always looking on the bright side of things. At his weight level, Franck would be perfect for the role of Isolde.

  • not telling says:

Mattila got Franck fired? I assumed that the only reason he was conducting at the Met was at La Karita’s behest, since he is the artistic and music director of the Finnish National Opera and has conducted here there several times.

He really has expanded quite rapidly in the past 3-4 years; in recent photos, he disturbingly resembles the American comic Louie Anderson.
