"I saw Harteros in her first run of Violettas. She was respectable. I assume she’s improved."

Expect Mandryka to send his second! Don't you realize that Harteros is the *greatest soprano of our day* in *everything she undertakes*???

While attending the world premiere performance of Dr. Atomic, I sat there thinking how it might make a decent made for TV movie. I think Oppenheimer needed to be made a truly tragic character for the thing to work, and that wasn't done.

I missed TTR's nipple ring. I was in Row V and missed it even with binoculars.

Leonard was great at performing the role, but vocally she still doesn't erase memories of Von Stade. But I guess that's expecting the impossible. The flowers were neat.

Burden was a close second on the applause meter. He's always interesting. That mournful, haunting voice was really something. Perhaps Rose was in better form the night I saw him.

Only Dr. Atomic and Thaïs interest me as I haven't seen either one live.
The rest doesn't seem very motivating to me. But I’d go to a Brewer Ring if someone other than Levine conducted

At the performance of BUDD I saw in Santa Fe, William Burden justly got he main applause, followed by Teddy Tadu; peter Rose came in third. He was good but the low noted were weak and it did not same a fresh take on the role, as Burden's was.

Glad someone else brought up Harteros again. After all this M Price wallowing, courtesy of Lindoro, it's good to remember that there IS life after Maggie - and it moves much better on stage, too.

Anyway, no point in comparing incomparables. But both are the classiest, and Harteros still has a long way to go. Just you wait for her Elisabetta.

As for sheer loveliness of sound, we've also got Schwanewilms. The Golden Age is not past.

Leper Ello--Good to hear they didn't trash it. I also saw the Met HD and didn't think too much of it. In LA, I'll be in the balcony, where the sound is very much in your face. I hope it doesn't get overbearing as it sometimes does.

High C's--I was in Santa Fe this year the week after you. That's a great venue for hearing David Daniels, though he complained about the elevation. The Billy Budd production was exceptional, and Peter Rose's Claggert was incredible. He got the biggest applause, though at intermission I overheard a woman in her 60's lamenting over her failure to bring her camera so she could have taken pics of Billy's pecs. Not as many people fled the Adriana at intermission as I expected. The second act saved the work. It got a standing ovation from most of the audience. BTW, Teddy Tahu and Isabel Leonard were pretty cozy at the Apprentice Scenes concert.

"I take it Friedkin and Woody didn’t turn the whole thing into complete crap. I’ll be seeing it next weekend."

Not at all. On the whole, I think they treated it with respect and were faithful to the music; I thought the Miracle in particular was a coup de theater, and superior to the Met's version. Schicchi was laugh out loud funny. As I said above, a few questionable choices here and there, nothing Regie-like, and for the most part traditional and nicely done. They were still fussing with lighting and tech stuff, and the singers were mostly singing half voice (Sondra went full blast), so it remains to be seen how it turns in out in full performance, but I was happier with what I saw here than what I saw at the Met HD last year. I am looking forward now to seeing a full blown performance in two weeks.

I see merit in all the criticism of her, but I still find her compelling on occasion. She came across better in Chicago than in her Leonoras in LA awhile back, of which I saw two. This was probably more due to the vastly superior accoustic of the Lyric than anything else. She also came across better when I saw her Violetta in Santa Fe and Elisabetta in San Diego.

I didn't notice any pitch problems with her last night at all; I just thought she was a bit much for Angelica, and her voice struck me as raspy. Tosca, Trovatore, Elena, maybe even Turandot? I could see that. Not Mimi, or Liu, or Angelica. But the test audience went wild for her last night and gave her a standing ovation, I have to grant her that. The man next to me was wiping tears at the end of Senza Mamma and then applauded like crazy.

You didn't see her in Stiffelio in London, Armerjacquino? The voice, in itself, was impressive, but rather tense so that it sounded very driven. It was all rather monochromatic and loud. But what bothered me most of all was her phrasing, or lack thereof. She was about as musical as a brick - there was just no heart or grace. Pitch problems didn't really strike me that night, but they were in evidence on the Met broadcast of Ernani earlier this year.

I heard Radvanovsky on a Met broadcast in Trovatore. I was only half listening as I cooked but eventually she had my full attention. I was blown away by her.

I know some people here have said she has pitch problems- not evident in that performance- but is that all people object to? She sounded the real deal to me.

"But that won’t be enough if you hate Sondra. Personally, I liked the way she sang in Chicago."

I heard her in the dress rehearsal for Trittico in LAO just last night. It was my first exposure to her, and while she was not my cup of tea, (she was a bull in a china shop as Angelica), I can see why folks either love or hate her. Otherise, aside for some (minor) directing choices that I thought were off the mark here and there, LAO's Trittico is impressive overall and I think the locals are in for a treat. It was still a rehearsal, but I liked what I *saw* here more than what I saw at the Met's HD a year ago. We'll see how it plays once they go all out and in full voice.

I heard her in the dress rehearsal for Trittico in LAO just last night.
Poster #21...in my opinion...I don't think any of the operas or productions are "hot" tickets. Some will have more appeal than others....but there is NOTHING there that I can't live without.

For the first time in the 12 or so years I've been paying attention, I actually think we have a more appealing season coming up in London than the one in New York. That said, I may well nip over for Thais and Rusalka, both operas I love that one seldom gets the chance to see. I usually enjoy Renee, so they look like good nights out to me.

Why anybody would want to see that Sonnnambula is beyond me - I agree, total snooze fest, and Dessay is just wrecked, a one trick pony who can only sort of half do her trick these days.

I checked four: Thais; Giovanni (what, nobody wants to see Schrott?); Sonnambula (I still have Dessay fever); Faust. Then I clicked the vote button and *smacks forehead* immediately realized I forgot to vote for my Dolora *smacks forehead again*

"What’s the buzz (if any) on Damnation de Faust? [snip] Are Relyea and Giordani up to it?"

Relyea is a solid, musical singer with very decent French. He will make a deluxe Wagner. Plus, his strapping presence onstage guarantees a happy Tony T.

But I keep waiting for them to announce what big star they have hired to bring a huge personality and a memorable voice to Mephistopheles-- hard to step into the shoes of its early New York exponents, Pol Plançon and Maurice Renaud!

ack!

sorry about the there/their error in my earlier post ... with advancing decrepitude, I find myself increasingly screwing up my homophones online ...

that line would have glossed quite differently in a younger day, i assure one and all.

I'm actually watching Doctor Atomic twice, but just because I adore Gerald Finley. Yeah, the opera is pretty dissapointing, but I am curious about how they're going to do the new production. I'm also watching Faust and Travatore for Le page and McVicar, Salome and Thais for the singers. I voted Sonnambula because, well, everybody else is going.

I saw this production of Thaiis in Chicago a few years ago. Fleming was glorious back then. I am not sure if she can still pull it off with the same ease. If she can it would be a wonderful production to see.

Gotham Chamber Opera???

spectacularly off-topic, i know, but this struck me as the least inappropriate of the current threads on which to post my question.

i have followed this interesting troupe for a number of years, and there website to date remains moribund respecting plans for the (nearly) current season. any info on what's happening down there?
