we could sing ‘happy birthday’ tomorrow

August 30 is the anniversary of the birth of a famous Quickly: Regina Resnik!

And here we have Mme. Resnik in a campy mood, sending up the faux-exoticism of Kismet.

Not Since Nineveh!

I’m sure Tippett would have rewritten Sosostris for la Sumac. Her range was actually most conducive to contemporary composers. And maybe the Woodbird?

  • A nice link, PUM, and a much-needed alkaline among the rather ineffective acids…

So Dame Janet retired from the concert platform as late as that? It’s just that I do remember that Aldeburgh recital being advertised at the time as her last. So it’s ‘not even if you cry Janet, Janet, Janet’.

Has there been any reporting of Mme Camus’s husband the sound engineer fiddling with the controls to get the high notes? I mean, did anyone ever hear her do it live?

Vicar- your tired little joke is one thing, but I think even such a slender excuse for trolling doesn’t justify the use of deeply offensive language. Shame on you.

  • PushedUpMezzo says:

Just to say that Dame Janet did indeed have a sense of humour. She was a highly acclaimed Dorabella in Scotland and a saucy Diana/Jupiter in La Calisto. I think there was also discussion of her doing Lady Billows, which would have been quite something.
    Not aware of any Sosostris!
Also very saddened by the Vicar’s vocab

  • Grimgerde says:

Golly, Vicar. Remember Auntie’s lines in Peter Grimes? Even if you do I’ll remind you. A joke’s a joke and fun is fun. But say your grace and be polite.

  • Krunoslav says:

Dame Janet of course also sang Octavian (and thus Mariandel) for Scottish Opera– that requires some humor/humour!

Boy, that is one NASTY Vicar! (And has he ever HEARD Roy Henderson??)

Armerjacquino, Nucci Condo says that she knows for a fact that Miss di Stasio cannot afford a telephone; also that Miss di Stasio should “get over herself”.

She did however state for the record that Irina Mishura is Moldova’s finest Sosostris.

  • armerjacquino says:

krunoslav, I heard that Anne Gjevang is in talks to present the new talent show, ‘Norway’s Next Top Sosostris’

  • PushedUpMezzo says:

Cher is considering the role in the Las Vegas premiere, but only if she also gets the movie

  • As I remember, Manistina practically saved the evening – the conducting (Hickox) was so bad and unrhythmical he was roundly booed, and those dances should never have been choreographed by an ‘assistant’, nice man though he is.

Not that I’m hugely fond of this opera, but it looks like a masterpiece alongside later Tippett.

The throwaway Sosostris line seems to have generated something which is developing from the snide into the amusing, hurrah. ‘Norway’s next Sosostris’ – I like that.

  • Often admonished says:

“Those wogs were lucky to get work there.”

More evidence that our dear Vicar is a fakeBrit – he should have said “krauts”.
