Here’s the solution to the Elfte Brautnacht! vocal ID quiz:

Congratulations to S.L., who was first with the correct answers.

La Cieca will admit that the snippet of Mary Costa included in the quiz catches this lovely soprano in something less than her best form. So let’s hear Miss Costa on a better day, as Rosalinda in a performance from 1967.

Mary Costa in “Fledermaus”

  • what fun.

is that a photo of la price as helen? did she actually sing that role onstage? i didn’t think she had. yowza!

as recordings, i prefer her, marc, and pauly. pauly’s vibrant and unfailingly clear tone are so refreshing, and certainly a vocal style we don’t here today.

however, i’d imagine i would have likely found marton most satisfying in the role LIVE.

I loved Tomowa and Marton. I also foung Pauley very satisfying.

The photo of price is as Cleopatra from the barber opera. She never sang Helene on stage, the aria was the closest she ever came to the role.

I got 10 out of 11. Damn it! another one that I got so damn close i could spit on myself!

Now Cieca cara, can we have a little folder on rapid share with some of those versions complete? Pretty please with a lot of sugar on top?

Caro Cieca, I enjoy all of the quizzes, but this one was especially fun, thank you.

As always, a beautiful montage of the answers. Thank you, Cieca!

I once borrowed Leontyne Price’s “Strauss Heroines” CD from a library I no longer have access to, and I’ll always regret not being able to get it again (it’s out of print, apparently). This aria and the one from “Guntram” left me stunned and awed.

That photo of Renee reminds me more and more of the Cowardly Lion after he’s been primped in Oz.

  • Paul says:

    Great fun!!!
    Thanks, La Cieca.

Once again, a fun and educational quiz. The only ones I got right were Jones, Price, Voight, Marc (those sexy high notes are a dead giveaway) and (sadly) Mme. Fleming.

I’m most concerned by #11; does this mean that she’s actually going to attempt Helena?!? On a stage?!?

  • I got Jones and Voigt. Should have gotten Price, but I know her in this from a live set only.

  • Oh, meant to say, Pauly is very, very impressive.

Pavel: I have the Price Heroines CD and play it often. I agree with you the Guntrum aria is just stunning and I’ve always wondered why it is not done more often as a concert piece. Or maybe it is and I’ve just not been lucky enough to hear it done. Also, can somebody in the know explain to me why Marc has not had a bigger career. The few times I’ve heard her on recordings I’ve been really knocked out by the size and beauty of the voice.
