Any singer who is known as “The Croatian Yma Sumac” you know already has won a place in La Cieca’s deepest heart of hearts. So the astonishing production values of the theatrical experience that is known as Priinceza na zrnu graÅ¡ka can only add to your doyenne’s abject veneration for the one, the only… Zdenka Kovačiček.

Maria Dragoni once did a touring Turandot. Made her entrance in Act 2, completely out of her depths and broke down. Conductor comes on stage befor Act 3, tells the audience there is no understudy asks “do they want to abandon or carry on..somehow?” They chose the latter and at critical points of Act 3, he reved the orchestra up to deliberately drown out ‘the sound interference’. End of story. Never heard of this new ‘opera company’ ever again.

I think we are now over the period when the Europeon ‘wall’ came down, and wicked little western devils tempted dollar- seeking ambitious ‘dime a dozen’ sopranos, to go hack their inadequate voices out in Brunnhildes and Turandots.
Oh! Opera can be such a cruel sport at times.
