I'll Take Manhattan" might start the TV movie genre rolling good, but someones will have to sing Maxi and Cutter. And a Rigoletto with Rig and a youngish Spart gladeyeing each other might be interesting. Has anyone in Euro staged Rig with this "gay" angle?

With High School Musical now being a phenom I keep hoping someone will someday give us "70s TV Movie the Opera." There was a load of these flix that all seems to have a Jill Clayburgh finding out that her B Bostwik husband was a psycho and she fled and was rescued by the local Tom Skerrit sheriff. Add her having a sickness of the week, and you have a whole genre waiting to be set to lofty music and keep the boxoffice happy. Now, to find some suitable singers.

A friend of mine who lost a lover to the church always claimed he loved Don Carlos best because he could relate to all the principal roles and their emotions..... As I talked him in from a ledge I explained that was why opera lovers love opera, because we can relate. It may not do us much good, but we can relate.

I assume that Domingo will want to extend his range yet further and so will play one of the teenagers, the other will obviously have to be a trouser-role, so respecting the great operatic tradition. Perhaps the Met can rectify their years of ignoring Podles by offering her the part. As for the mother of one of the boys it would need somebody capable of playing an all-American soccer mom type – if only the Met knew of a soprano like that.

Here's a proposed alternative ending: They actually end up happy.

No, that'd require too much talent to write. Drama and tragedy are easier to pull off than an uplifting ending. Enough of Brokeback already.

Speaking of trendy commissions by big opera houses, remember years ago when Bobby McFerren's Gethsemane was scheduled for the San Francisco Opera? Can someone pour the hot tea about what went wrong there?

Boy we gays know how to eat our young, don't we? Mothertounge has moments of exquisite beauty and achieves a remarkable catharsis at the end. It's also considerably ambitious in scope and execution. Would I have chosen Nico Muhly to write an opera based on this or Speaks Volumes? Not necessarily - but the kid certainly understands what makes a great opera (read his essay on Peter Grimes on the Met website at http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/news/features/detail.aspx?id=3399). As to the choice of Craig Lucas, let's just all count our blessings that he wasn't saddled with Terrence McNally.

I'm genuinely excited by the prospect of a music-theater work from Nico Muhly, even if ends up at Lincoln Center Theatre and not the Met. Besides, don't we all want to see this work reach the stage just so we can read AT's anguished review of it in the Times?

Getting to know Nico Muhly's work has been an artistic highlight of a rather dreary summer along with finally seeing La Piscine with Alain Delon. Speaking of Alain Delon, when is some barihunk crazy queen going to turn Rocco and his Brothers into an opera? Jack Heggie, your muse is calling.

Nico is this year's Rufus.

Who will be next year's Nico?

Krunoslav: are these Lincoln Center Theater collaborations intended for the Met stage anyway? Much more likely they would end up at the Mitzi Newhouse in the tradition of the immortal Syllabaire pour Phèdre.

'Great!!! Gay teenage angst can turn you into a killer. Just the kind of positive image and message the community has been waiting for.'

It's not the artist's job to provide 'positive images'. It's the artist's job to create works on subjects, and about characters, that interest him, or her.

Maybe Theo Adam and Peter Schreier can do the Leipzig premiere-- with Celestina Casapietra in the Tori "toxic" Spelling role of the obnoxious best friend.

Does anyone here estimate the chances of Muhly's opera appearing on the Met mainstage as more than one in a billion?

Great!!! Gay teenage angst can turn you into a killer. Just the kind of positive image and message the community has been waiting for. Why don't they just make an opera out of "Boys in the Band" and be done with it?

Has anyone else listened to excerpts from his MotherTongue album on YouTube? What crap. Composing an opera for the Met? Talk about having greatness thrust upon one.
