RogerEvansOnline reports that George Steel, executive director of Columbia University’s Miller Theatre, will be the new general director of the Dallas Opera. La Cieca would like to take a moment to recognize the “man bites dog” novelty angle of this story: Steel is not British.
Come to think of it, Andrea Gruber is available now, isn’t she?
Hopefully Heppner as Ahab, supported by a whalebone leg, will not sink the Pequod when he comes aboard. But he and Eaglen did not sink Isolde’s boat, or Flagstad and Melchior didn’t either, but no one shows how much water the ship is taking on under the two lovers in act 1.
For anyone who would like to hear George Steel’s authentic “voice” speaking of music in a wide-ranging way. Here he is:

Don’t tell me this person hasn’t thought through the elementary issues that he is presumptuously attacked by some here for not knowing about.
“And so I was excited when Betsy Sussler encouraged me to invite George to my home to browse my CD collection and tape our conversation about music. During the discussion we were joined by Larry Lipnik, a member of two brilliant early music groups, Lionheart, where he sings countertenor, and Parthenia, a viol consort in which he, of course, plays the viol.”
Dallas deserves this. Without a doubt.
Alessandra Marc has to be the whale, with glorious, soaring and tragic Straussian lines haunting Ahab’s every utterance. Please please please.
KT: That seems reasonable. She’s probably available too. She seems to sing infrequently, although I presume she is still active.
Often admonished: After listening, I can only agree with you. Dallas does deserve it.
I’m sure he’ll win over the hearts and minds of all Dallasonians once he dons a Cowboys uniform for publicity shots.
‘And if Mortier isn’t running the New York City Opera, who is? The press release about George Manahan starts with “New York City Opera General Manager-Designate Gerard Mortier is very pleased to announce that Maestro George Manahan…‒
He was announcing an appointment that would take effect during his term of office. What’s so strange about that? The word “designate” you seem to miss.
54, isn’t that rather a cheap shot, when the quote is not of Steel but of Wegman, who is NOT, so far as I know, going to Dallas and whose statements cannot be laid to the charge of George Steel?
