RogerEvansOnline reports that George Steel, executive director of Columbia University’s Miller Theatre, will be the new general director of the Dallas Opera. La Cieca would like to take a moment to recognize the “man bites dog” novelty angle of this story: Steel is not British.
#2, people out of the set of Brideshead Revisited or the latest Polo catalogue are who Americans think people from Oxbridge look like, but the truth is, only Americans trying to look like upper class Brits end up looking like that.
Willym – rightly so! Bing wasn’t American, afterall! Didn’t sound like one, anyway.
Love it, Cocky! And let’s face it, posh Brits never look as cleanly scrubbed as the Ralph Lauren brigade. There’s always that whiff of grubby country houses and dog hair about them.
Not to mention the horse shit…
In the NYTimes article, Dallas is kinda dismissed as being a warhorese only city… but next years schedule (Boheme/Figaro/Fledermaus/ItalianGirl/RobtDever) is clearly designed to get interest up in the city before making the move to the Winspear Opera House… a smart move i think…(The first season in the new house is a little more adventurous, with Otello/MobyDick (Heggie)(World Premire)/Cosi/DonPasqale
My hope is that this guy sticks around… a little longevity would be nice…we havent had that for several years.
And youve clearly proven yourself, jatm2063…youre the biggest sh*t-stirrer on the box…Im gonna stick with the flirty approach… but have nearly given up on Hairymusclez… but I have 4 or 5 (!) reasons to chat up dcrazmo…
Sorry Cocky was that a bad thing?
oh damn and Bing was British too…
A naturalised Brit, yes. But I was agreeing with you, Willym.
I don’t think that there is anything wrong with being a warhorse only opera house per se. If one looks at the METs upcoming season, it is almost ALL warhorses. Very, very safe repertoire in terms of selling tickets.
I am going to jump completely onto Steel’s side now, and say again, maybe some young new blood is just the thing they need, especially if they are building a new opera house.
I am sure Cieca would be delighted to see Regie productions of all the favorites take over the Dallas Opera. I am imagining Il Trovatore set in LA’s gang neighborhoods, or something like that.
jatm now youre pissin me off… dont go wishing a bunch of nasty trash on the opera scene in dallas… you are a stupid ugly bitch…go back where you came from!!!
Just kiddin… i was just playin up your effect on posters… besides, i have recently befriended the director of the Don Pasquale (come here, Mr. Gunn…) and id never let her turn it into something ugly… not that SHE would anyway…
