baby love

La Cieca has just learned that Anna Netrebko, who is currently awaiting the September arrival of her first child, has withdrawn from her scheduled Met performances as Mimì on December 29, 2008 and January 3 matinee, 6, and 10, 2009.
According to a press release from the met, the soprano “has decided that she will need a few more weeks than originally planned to be ready for her return to the stage” following the birth of the Schrott Tot. Maija Kovalevska will replace Netrebko for the Bohème performances. Netrebko promises a return to the company on January 26 in Lucia di Lammermoor.
Sorry, she is having a baby. She needs to be home with the child until it is school-age (age 5.) She can perform as much as she likes but she cannot travel or be away from home for more than a few hours at a time. The baby comes first, not her (otherwise, it made no sense for a young, beautiful and talented woman to have a baby in the first place and keep it.) She better cancel 90% of her performing and keep her morals in check. People can live their lives however they choose but a child is an entirely different affair.
F***! I got a ticket to see Boheme one more time because this is probably the ideal role for Netrebko. I love Boheme, but oh God, to sit through another run-of-the-mill performance ! Anyone knows anything about the conductor?
Who knows, maybe Angela Georghiu will step in. After all, she’ll be there for La Rondine as well at exactly the same time. Of course, it might not sit well with Renee Fleming, who will be singing Thais at that time as well, for AG to be starring in two productions at the same time.
just wondering who the cover for the Lucia performances are. I wonder if it is Damrau who will be singing the earlier performances. One is being broadcast as well. Regardless of that I am getting my tickets for the earlier run. Maybe Massis would be available again and she was quite good last season.
I can imagine that Lucia might not be the best role to start with again after the baby pause since she isn’t a coloratura to start with.
So, NYSailorScout…working mothers have no morals? Interesting point of view; you might talk with your shrink about that.
And as Netrebko IS doing the right thing and canceling, what’s with the criticism? Let’s assume that she’ll be a loving, generous, smart mom until she proves to the world that she isn’t.
Good lord – have baby, will travel. It’s not that hard, much less immoral or whatever other words you want to throw down at the crowd from your high horse. A lot of opera mothers do it.
And unlike most working/singing mothers, she can afford to hire an army of nannies.
such sexism crap. she can have her baby and travel where ever she wants. Schrott won’t stay home why should she. Hire some great duennas and get on with your life. Good for her.
Crap to say check your morals. Check yours.
i’m impressed that she’s even wiling to do the later run of lucias…she would be well within her rights as a mother to cancel those as well.
NYSailorScout – funny, I always thought of you as being quite young- now with you last post reminding me of my Great Grandmother’s attitudes (she’s been dead for forty years) I can only assume you must be older than me by twenty years at least! Wow! You clever old thing writing on a computer!
