    Unquestionable :
    Best Delilah: ME!
    Best Samson: Sanford!

    Where are those bloody scissors?

  • ruxton says:

When Sanford et moi are not available the next most attractive couple would have to be Rise and Placido.

Although la Graves looks pretty good to!
If you are into the full plate of potatoes and sausages- of course Borodina is an entre, main course and desert all rolled and rolled and rolled into one!

for anyone interested, there are now some(off German TV) of Inge Brokh singing Lady MacBeth(in the ’90s) I guess the legend has always been that no videos of her singing existed. Bless utube that some stuff is actually out there for us.

There was a photo once probly in Opera News of Rise and Mario DM on stage doing Sam and Dal. She looked sexy and he had broad shoulders(padding?) but was wearing elevator shoes.

After Horne sung at the Met Centennial, she made the real sweet and classy move of walking over to Stevens (one of the honored Artists sitting on Stage) and giving her a great big hug and kiss…(while dour Zinka was adjusting her cuffs….lol!!)

One of my favorite scenes from the Gala…1

brooklynpunk I’m glad someone else loves that special Zinka moment too! It’s a hoot! Of course Rise was synonymous with Delilah so that gesture of Marilyn’s was wonderful. I think I’ve said it before but the recording of Rise and Del Monaco doing S & D is wonderful. The pic in opera news was probably the same one they used on the cover of the LP.
Poor del Monaco would have needed more than platform shoes to get him up to required height… more like apple crates or stilts.

I got to know (bits of) Samson et Dalila from an LP of highlights with del Monaco and Stevens under, I think, Cleva – bought in 1979 for about 50 pence from the Oxford University Gramophone Library, which was probably clearing out all recordings that didn’t feature Emma Kirkby or Renaissance polyphony.

It had a great photo on the cover of Mario and Rise in a clinch, each showing off a fine profile. She’s a bit past her best vocally, but a great “Lache … que sans amoower, je te meprise!”
