It was tough, but I think at least six of these are correct:

    1. Marilyn Horne
    2. Tatiana Troyanos
    3. Agnes Baltsa
    4. Olga Borodina
    5. Grace Bumbry
    6. Elina Garanca
    7. Dolora Zajick
    8. Brigitte Fassbaender

    I’m certain of 1,3,4,6,7,8…

I can’t get the file to play … Any suggestions?
It is most frustrating being denied one’s Dalilas …

  • hab mir's gelobt says:

gosh i am so bad at this … i am only ‘sure’ about 1 and 8. and i agree on those with MVelthuijsen – those voices are so distinct that once you know them they are easy to identify.

    Here’s my guesses:
    1. Horne
    2. Graves
    3. Obraztsova
    4. Borodina
    5. Bumbry
    6. Ludwig
    7. Zajick
    8. Meier, W. not J.

  • Cocky Kurwenal says:

I agree with Velthuijsen’s list with the exception of number 3, which I am sure is Obraztsova, not Baltsa, who I don’t believe is represented. 8 is most definitely Fassbaender.

Sanford, many thanks for putting this together. Just one thing though – how could you exclude Famous Quickly!?

  • Momentous says:

Could Verrett be in the mix? Oh, then there’s Barbieri…Merriman Hmmm, think I’ll sit back on my lilac settee and call my pal Oralia and discuss the colorings and densities of the mezzo voce! Cheers to Sanford!

  • Rinaldo says:

Horne seems unmistakeable as #1, but I’m equally sure that #2 is NOT Troyanos — her sound is unique for me, and this isn’t it. I’m going to beg off the others.

Sigh- I suppose if I come out with a list everyone’s going to think my boyfriend talked in his sleep… :)

  • oldddansker says:

Is it just me or is it she–Horne, that is. Two notes, maybe just one, and I’ve got her nailed. But the others elude me, and I’ve heard them all, one way or another, in my life. But that Marilyn: sui generis ultra.

    What? No Klaus Nomi?
