together again for the first time

Can it be that in mid-July we are already thinking about the last days of summer? Well, La Cieca is, especially since she’s just found out that Robert Wilson‘s Byrd Hoffman Watermill Foundation will offer the unlikely duo of Rufus Wainwright and Jessye Norman in a concert entitled “Last Song of Summer” on August 30.

According to Fashion Week Daily, the grande dame/ex-tweaker pairup promises to be “a noted departure from the center’s always highly-anticipated 15th-annual Watermill summer benefit on July 26… This year’s gala will feature the work of German artist Jonathan Meese, who … will transform the venue’s pure design into an ‘ever changing assemblage of cult, kitsch and historical relics’.”

Wish I could go – if only for the curiosity factor.I wonder if she will sing any of his existing songs (I also wonder where he is in the opera composition process?) I have often thought that several of his songs would work very nicely on an art song program – and Jessye did put out that Michele Legrand recording…

If it’s half the embarrassment Wainwright’s Carnegie Hall homage to Judy Garland was, it should be a doozy. And given that he’s now the better voice of the two…

  • operadirector says:

You’re right dcrazmo – the Judy Garland thing was unfortunate – but his original material is worth a listen.

I never thought I’d see “grande dame” and “ex-tweaker” in the same sentence, much less separated only by a virgule.

  • DirkVA says:

I trust that our Doyenne will wear appropriate dabs of LA VOCE DE RENEE FLEMING to this, um, mountain-top musical experience.

  • Sanford says:

Which is the grande dame and which one is the ex-tweaker?

  • I’m curious what was so bad about the evening of Judy Garland necrophilia, but then maybe I’ve just answered my own question.

“gay gay gay gay gay gay” indeed! LOL

Wainright is a very talented song writer and his singing is fine, tehcnically. He’s just such a boring, one-note singer; he does nothing with the notes or words. I haven’t heard his Judy Garland concert but I can’t imagine it being good.
