Members of the cher public indigenous to the District of Columbia and its environs will welcome Anne Midgette as music critic for the Washington Post, as leaked this morning on Ionarts.  In fact, Midgett’s full-time appointment is good news on a national scale, given the media’s current scary cutbacks in arts coverage.

The scribe’s current less than cheerful assignment is to write the obituary of legendary press representative Edgar Vincent, whom Midgette describes as the “antithesis of the stereotypical loud-mouth, attention-hungry PR rep.”

Midgette pretty has pretty much been holding down the music critic role at the Washington Post since the first of the year. In my opinion, she’s done a pretty good job.

So sorry to hear about Mr. Vincent—truly unique in the business and liked by just about everyone. The music business is not as nice a place without him.

I must agree with Pavel. I find Midgette’s writing to be thought-provoking and her criticism clearly set forth, but fair. Moreover, when I read one of her reviews I have a sense of what the concert or performers actually sounded like. This aspect of arts reporting I have found to be lacking in many reviewers who regurgitate a plethora of background information on the work(s) being performed, but provide scant reporting of the actual performance itself. I haven’t agreed with every detail of Midgette’s reviews of performances I have attended, but I do believe she is an asset to us in Washington.

as a new yorker, I hope Midgette remains a DC asset for years and years to come.
