a regie, a bone and a hank of hair

Guesses poured in for our most recent Regie quiz, but correct reponses were few and far between. The opera is in fact Martin’s Una cosa rara, and (credit where credit is due) the handsome though bewildering photographs were by Ken Howard.

A more familiar title graces the quiz this time around. The imagery, however, is among the most obscure thus far.  Reminder: if you recognize the production, please DO NOT blurt it out. The point of the quiz is guessing!

It’s either Rake’s Progress or La Traviata. They’re both so similar, it’s really hard to tell, even with a good production.

  • Andy says:

No, it’s clearly Fanciulla. 1. “Hello, Minnie!” 2. “Ch’ella mi creda” 3. “Tre assi, e un paio!”

  • Ariosto says:

I think it’s Don Giovanni. Pic 1 is Zerlina at the wedding, Pic 2 is the finale of act 1 and pic 3 the don at dinner.

Of course, this is too obvious, so it could be Suor Angelica or Die Entführung.

  • Cosi fan tutte or Rake’s Progress.

  • aristotle_incarnate says:

Would that be the “cosa rara” referenced in Don Giovanni?

  • FlorezFan says:

I think it IS “La Traviata.”

Pic. #1: Party scene, or gambling scene.

Pic. #2: The carnival revelers invade Violetta’s house. My guess is that the masked belly-dancer is Vi herself.

Pic #3: Alfredo discovers Violetta has gone back to Paris. Note the squibbles on the green background –clearly the country, compared with the black-&-gold in the other pics, indicating the city.

If that’s a hat the black is holding in the bottom picture, it’s “Fancuilla.” If it’s a bedpan, it’s “Boheme.”

  • Jacques says:

    Arabella ?

  • Harold says:

I don’t know, but I’m going to guess that the production is in a German-speaking country.
