One of the best performances of Rose was given by none other than Ann Sothern! It was in the early 60′s, at a dinner theatre, somewhere is Mass. That dame had versatility pouring out of veins.
the biggest suprise of my life was the first time I heard Marilyn Horne live. The voice was not big. it was rather samll, powerful and focused but not big. It sounds huge on recordings and broadcasts but in the house it was not huge, always thrilling but never Nilsson or Dimitrova huge. Zajick and Cossotto had bigger voices but Horne had such incredible technique you quickly forgot that the voice was not huge, Podles definitely had a bigger voice. I love Marilyn Horne but would never define her as a “belter.”
paddy, my experience with Horne was very similar. I do think that later on she could have done Rose with the usual theater miking a la Lupone. But Horne is right that the 8-a-week scheduled would play havoc with a classical technique.
Certainly I was not implying that Horne was belter by trade in the Broadway sense…but she is very capable of belting and bringing the chest voice unusually high. Hear her sing” The Man I Love ” live and you will hear thrilling chest/belt. Not a huge voice at all….but on a mike in the theatre rep…gargantuan.
“Helen Morgan was no Anna Held.”
Anna Held, well you can have her! Helen Morgan was no Nora Bayes in my opinion.
