video killed the opera star?

Well, no, actually. In fact, telegenic divas and divos date back at least half a century. Here are Clara Petrella and Giacinto Prandelli in a 1956 telecast of Manon Lescaut.

A historic, world-famous Musetta, Butterfly and Tosca, I could sing Manon Lescaut tomorrow– it’s a question of color and tessitura. In my day that bleach-blonde Republican husband-stalker Dottie rather hogged it.

I believe Petrella was Magda Sorel in the Italian-language The Consul at LaScala when Menotti couldn’t get Callas to do it. Is there a pirate of it?

Off topic again, sorry, but those impoverished among us saw the Met Tristan on Public TV yesterday afternoon. I liked the split-screen presentation (it goes well with the production). Too bad it wasn’t Deb’s best singing (I understand she was still recovering from being sick). That Liebestod was mightly flat! All in all I can do without the backstage interviews and yatta-yatta.
