La Cieca is thrilled to note that VAI have continued their series of releases from the NHK Lirica Italiana telecasts of the 1960s and 1970s. These DVDs, remastered from original broadcasts on Japanese television, preserve performances by some of the greatest Italian artists of the mid-20th century. The most recent treasure to be unearthed is a 1967 video of Un ballo in maschera starring Carlo Bergonzi and Antonietta Stella.

Unfortunately the time constraints of YouTube prevent the inclusion of the elaborate series of bows taken by Bergonzi and Stella in response to the audience’s thunderous ovation. This metaperformance goes on almost as long as the duet itself!

re Ballo singing: long age on the old Ben Grauer Toscanini series Ben played a clip of Arturo at rehersal of the ’54 Ballo concert in which he sang for the orchestra the “mocking” duet of Ank. and Horn. Where would one go to find if that bit is available to hear. Just curious.

The engagement is in direct proportion to the size and color of the rock on my finger. For example, that 20 carat Canary Diamond in the window on Madison Ave (between 62nd and 63rd, on the west side of the street) would get a short engagement. Something from your local Kay Jewellers? ENdless engagement.

Had the pleasure of hearing Irene Kramarich as Azucena in the early 1960s at
the Brooklyn Opera Co.’s “Trovatore.” What a
booming mezzo she had. Too bad she never sang
    at the Met.
