Thanks for having "censored" and removed my (poor) English translation of message 45. True or false anecdote may be, unquestionably remains a regrettable lack of style. Just a few days after Leyla's death... Shame!

Well, I didn't make up the story. But it's pointless to be defensive here. When I mentioned how Gelb's ideas were anticipated by Michael Bronson I was called a liar until someone who was there posted anonymously that it was all true and s/he had never seen it written in public before. When I posted some anecdotes about Marton someone who said he was her best friend posted to say they were all made up -- until a few months later it seems they weren't. When I mentioned that Lotte Lehmann and Herbert Jannsen among others were gay -- there was an insane outcry. Until a book with documents appeared that proves that was fact. When I recalled stories told me by Jerry Robbins about Mary Martin in Peter Pan, and also about her behavior in Sound of Music there was insane outcry but the stories can be found in a variety of books, starting with the most recent and compendious Robbins bio. When I posted an eye witness account of Pippo di Stefano carrying on in Philly it was called untrue -- but an account not by an eyewitness is in the new Corelli bio.

These diva types and other sentimentals either want to own the memory of someone (their story or no ones) or they have something invested in their own fiction. Eva couldn't have a lightly blue sense of humor, Gelb couldn't have gotten some of his ideas elsewhere, there were no gay people before 1990, at least none you've heard of, Leyla couldn't have told a funny though perhaps tasteless story about Callas -- of course she wouldn't speak ill of another soprano, particularly one she was found inferior to or accused of imitating. Sorry -- I apologize for the Italian, but I heard worse from Leyla over many years. Her redeeming grace was a sense of humor, which these angels lack.

quel povero ragazzino ciccione si deve essere inventato tutto: Leyla Gençer sapeva essere tagliente e spiritosa ma MAI volgare come la descrive lui. E poi, che stile! scrivere una cosa del genere dopo che Leyla è morta. Vergogna!!!

Thank you very much for this tribute to Leyla Gencer. I am an ardent fan of hers since the late seventies and have collected any pirate discs I could lay my hands on.
You have described her vocal interpretations, qualities and "faults" extremely well. Yet I know of few other singers who can create vocal excitement even on a badly recorded pirate disc like her, she is riveting! One of the very great opera interpretators of the 20th century.

And I probably shouldn't have done it at all -- it was just so funny I half felt I owed it to Leyla's unbowed spirit, but perhaps discretion as the better half should have won out. Sorry anybody who is offended...

Grammatical slips? Probably, I can hear it in my head but trying to get it down I got mixed up in tenses (my bete noir), since Leyla was covering several periods. I wish I had a tape of her, for her word coloration was half the fun. Sorry -- I think one must read it for the gist and forgive my betisses.

I am sorry High C's, I'll let La Cieca decide if it should be translated. I wonder at my judgment in repeating it, but it does go to how funny Leyla was and how much of an edge there was to her humor. It has something to do with fat Callas (poverona as opposed to ina) and her husband seeking something for her pleasure he was unwilling to provide -- if La Cieca says to go ahead, I will provide a translation, but it might be a euphemistic one.

Well, here is what I remember Leyla saying to me and my grandfather (and a few other men) in Naples when I met her. I was a fat 13 year old who had eyes only for her. In any case the conversation turned to La Greca povera (Maria Callas) and after a deep intake of breath and a careful look at me, Leyla said, "Quel poverona Callas! Sai, suo marito antico ha dovuto girare intorno ed gridava agl' uomini italiani -- 'per carita, per l'amor del Gesu, voi viene prendere la mia moglie --- " and here she took a long look at me -- "da dietro!!!" The men all bellowed. "No, non burlo," she continued, "ella avrebbe quell' sesuale Greca dai tempi antichi! Lui direbbe, 'senti, ha una parte enorme, esso sarà come -- come il riempimento del canyon messicani!!!!! Beh, a volte uno verrebbe avanti e prenderebbero uno sguardo a quello poverona -- e farebbero funzionare via i grida." I was howling by then, all the others aside from my grandfather who was offended, were laughing. I had never thought in those terms before. She continued, "Insomma, ma poi ha incontrato Visconti, lui non potrebbe diminuire il suo invito. Era come avere dieci ragazzi. Dieci?! Venti! Ma -- e cosi il mondo e gli'uomini -- dopo un istante lo ha annoiato. Triste donna! Ma, per fortuna trovata Onassis -- il dio del sua culo!!!!!!"

Now this is a gossip site, please. I have no idea if there is any truth to this whatever. But her delivery was just hysterical, incredible, with her enormous eyes demonstrating everything. Later my grandfather said it might have been true for all he knew, but she was not a good person for repeating it at all, especially in front of a fanciullo as he thought I was (little did he know) -- ero una grande regina tanto tempo fa!

Great article - totally agree with your views of the Macbeth and Belisario releases.

There's a La Scala Forza (als gast in Köln) with Di Stefano which shows how great Gencer was in less-than-florid music. Her Leonora is so strangely inflected, so full of abrupt gear shifts and unexpected pianissimi, that she is gives a perfect picture of a passive-agressive in thrall to Daddy in the first recit, never mind how far she takes it in the opening aria. Even her little departures from pitch - seemingly forgotten in the few cadenzas and unaccompanied vocalises - can be taken as emblems of encroaching dementia. Wow.

If I say that Di Stefano is in the same class, I mean it in both possible ways.

MrsJC and skeptic: you are of course both valued member of the commenter band, and La Cieca thinks it will make everyone's life easier if you just ignore each other from this point on. Next one of you who tries a personal dig at the other gets moderated, okay?

[redacted] but I saw Giulietta and a large group of unruly school children at a Scala event -- their notion of outreach. She was probably 88 or so at the time, and of course the kids had no idea who she was. One big boy went up to her (and he was taller) and asked her what she thought of "il Rap". "Il Rap?" She asked. "Ma, si, i canzoni del nostro secolo!". He answered. "Ma, Rap... Cosi?" She said, and smacked him in the back of the head, hard. He almost fell over. I have rarely laughed so much in my life and one of the duci della scala pulled me out of the auditorium while the teachers tried to stop a riot.

I haven't had the chance to watch the entire chest register video yet, but Simionato is one classy old dame - love the demo from Trovatore - and Gencer clearly had a wicked sense of humour (or should that be humor, lest I give myself away as an evil, job-nabbing Limey).

Is Mark Zucker's speaking voice for real? Or was he the prototype for Mark Maniaci?

I AM Carla Gavazzi!!!!!!! You mean you don't know her Fanciulla (Cetra)?, Adrianna (Cetra)? and Rissurezione (which I up loaded to Opera Share)? Not to mention her RAI video of Cav. The very greatest!!!!! Shame! Shame!

I knew Leyle but [redacted]. I met her when I was 13, and though she was rather grand with fans, my grandfather and I went to dinner at a pal of hers in Naples and she was there. She sized me up as an overgrown sunt and was hilariously funny. I remember still what she said (shocked grandpop, I'll tell you that much) and can hear her inflections and see her eyes. She was always the best to talk to, though I have to say that she wins the prize for unmitigated gall. I didn't see her as often as some, but I was witness to an insane Norma in Rome and a Forza that was just as crazy in Vicenza. Pity her Odabella and Caterina were not so good on the East Coast, she was having some confidence issues but she also fed off an audience -- Italians always gave her something (boos, veggies, insane ovations) to work with. But 'Gli'mericani' were so 'fredezza, come L'inglese quando il nebbia veniva dentro, o si affogato nel palude di Hardy!!" She had actually read Return of the Native in Italian!!

Barbieri is indeed hilarious - especially the look on her face when first posed the question about chest voice, followed by her 'Mai!', as if, like her gracious majesty Queen Elizabeth II, she is 'shocked and saddened in equal measure' at the very idea. The grappa-induced groaning is indeed quite something.

Many thanks for identifying Carla Gavazzi. Absolutely never heard of her, but she talks a lot of sense, as you say. Ancient though she is, one can somehow imagine her in Act II Scene I of Trav being rather splendid based on her little demonstrations of musicianship.

Kurwenal, the woman at the end is Carla Gavazzi. I've only heard snippets of her Adriana, but was really quite impressed. She and Leyla are the voices of reason in this film, although I think I read somewhere that Simionato refused to attend the premiere if Leyla was going to be there, simply because of her comments.

Isn't mamma Barbieri hilarious? Pissed off her tree on grappa and singing like some demented bass, but marvellous all the same.

As for the Monte Ivnor, I'll second meremarie: I'd never recomend it for the music, which is rather awful. Only for Gencer's voice.

Check out this link - most amusing. Barbieri and Simionato interviewed on the subject of chest voice. Both are shocked at the very idea, and deny ever having used it! Gencer then says they are talking absolute nonsense (it is clear that Barbiere and Simionato understand something different from the term). Rather a bizarre little film - the interviewer is a gentleman who speaks in falsetto - but highly amusing. And can anybody tell me who the elderly lady at the end is, who describes Gencer as intelligent and the rest of them as ignorant?

"Shits of register"? I assume that is acceptable 21st century journalism prose, but what does it really mean? Cornetto di Basso must be convulsing in his grave.

Gotta hand it to the Brits when it comes to obituaries. Here's an excellent Gencer obit from The Guardian.
