Il Guarany, all of the Moffo Verdi and French Arias have been posted to Youtube. I found them on vinyl on Ebay and my brother-in-law converted them to digital for me. BTW, I used to sing (or attempt to) the baritone aria from your eponymous opera. To paraphrase FamousQuickly, I couldn't sing that aria tomorrow: it's a question of color and especially tessitura (too high).

I've been thinking along the same lines as Figliaimpura. Last night, as PBS ran the Mattila "Manon Lescaut," I wondered if the costumes could be any uglier.

New contest: Name this tired, old production?

Before I found out which production this was, I was still able to read "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" into the second picture. A bit crass, perhaps, but Giulietta was a deputy at the Bundestag (= eine Hure).

But now the the cat is out of the bag, check it out -
http://mostlyopera.blogspot.com/2008/04/berlin-fascinating-production-of-magic.html

and the official page of this production (in German) - http://www.die-zauberfloete-in-der-u-bahn.de/

Cieca, fun though this quizz is (and I do love trying to figure out the German mind.. or lack of it) couldn't you do much the same thing with a lot of the old rep from the Met or other houses (Scala, Covent Garden etc)? I mean, one Donizetti certainly tended to look like another when I was a girl and Don Giovanni seemed indistinguishable in most houses from Ernani or Rigoletto at times. A generalisation, I know, but as Mr Poutney once said "sometimes in replacing an old fashioned setting you create a greater monster in its place".

Just a thought, Cieca..........................................

It's from her Verdi Arias album , which has, as far as I know, never come out on CD. The album cover I remember it having is a gorgeous black and white photo, but that was a reissue in the 70s. I believe it was originally released in the mid 60s.

I suggest a surprising new game. Put on your favourite cd and accompany with random images from the television - any film is suitable for this purpose. You will find that miraculously music and visuals match up in an entirely apporiate manner, although sometimes the results are less outrageous than contemporary productions.

Did anyone read Mr Holland's latest opus?

"Her opening songs, mostly late-Romantic lieder, were not kind to the present condition of her voice, relying as they did on the ability to sing at midrange quietly and in tune." - in today's review of Jessye Norman's recital.

it's a shame when people sing music that makes them rely on singing in tune, isn't it?
