bis in our time

I remember the opening night of La Rondine at NYCO//
They encored the Act II concertato….to the surprise of the chorus and the principals. Miss Sills was in charge and she almost had a fit. The maestro just didn’t look up at her seat and just went right ahead with the bis. First one in my many years of opera going.

Only here could a really terrific, magical moment be spoiled by hand-wringing, bitching and moaning!! Can you just ENJOY something for once in your lives without worrying about the sociological implications of a fucking encore?????

  • Mark says:

Bravo! 2 1/2 minutes is an enormous ovation — Netrebko, the hooker, has never gotten more than 40 seconds for anything.

He is the SUPERSTAR opera singer of our time — yippee!

Netrebko got a two-minute ovation for her Puritani mad scene.

I’m happy for JDF and his success. This is the perfect aria for an encore if someone can do it well. However, let’s remember that all the high c’s are probably not as difficult for him with his type of voice as they would be for many other tenors. Yes, 18 high c’s is excellent—but it would have been a marvel for heavier voices to pull off. His voice is light and reedy—it’s not a dramatic instrument. It was one to be enjoyed from its own merits. Having seen some of his Duke on the internet, I hope he sticks to the lighter bel canto rep.

…and he just interpolated a high C# into his aria. BRAVA JDF!!

    “It’s now become a thing”

Kind of like the standing ovations that even mediocre Broadway shows get on a nightly basis. It seems that audiences are self-congratulatory when they stand or ask for encores, when the plays/artists haven’t earned them. I’m not necessarily talking about JDF tonight, as I didn’t hear it.

I like watching the preview appear as I type.

Bravi! How often do the stars align like this? Great singers, great production, fearless direction, inspired acting. I say make hay while the sun is shining. Wonderful!! I can’t wait for Saturday.

  • Reggiani says:

…and tossed off a few more high Cs as he joined Dessay in the finale.

Writing this on the way home from the MET…what a great night…to have had two completely thrilling, yet diametrically opposite experiences like FILLE and SATYAGRAHA this week is wonderful.
