Good for him! This is the way to make opera super-exciting. If he does it during the HD, he’ll get lots of publicity and will likely become a personality outside the opera world too. A superstar.
Shameless, I say – shameless! Now it’s just becoming a “thing”, not really a spontaneous joyousness. Maybe undeniable at 5 minutes ovation – but not at 2 & a half.
Who gets 5-minute ovations? Geez! I think the ovation warranted an encore and I say bravissimo. He was flawless and he delivered what the crowd wanted. I love it. Singing 18 high Cs in less than 10 minutes is no mean feat.
La fille is my least-favourite Donizetti so this kind of spectator-sport stuff (and the leads who can deliver) is the only thing keeping my interest. Dessay is sounding pretty good too. She was quite moving in that last aria.
I loved it. I just hope this doesn’t start a trend at the Met and that other superstars (Fleming? Netrebko? Gheorghiu?) demand the right to do encores. (and demand that their claques organize standing ovations after arias)
Bravo!!! Bravo!!! Shameless?? You bet…but FUN!! This is what this opera should be FUN!!
You’re absolutely right, Gelb the showman said just enough in that article to plant the seed of an encore….and if you don’t think he’ll do it in the HD broadcast, you’re crazy!!
like daintymouth, it is fun, shameless, and all of the above. Even if the scene seems to overly planned, methinks the ovation would have continued for 5 if that is what some of us wanted before we think he deserved it.
I REALLY missed JDF in Barber in Chicago, and glad hes back in fine form after the fish boner… but i dont want him to become known as ‘the one who encores’ everywhere… esp. in cities where they clap at the drop of a hat… I should think it impossible to predict, as youd need to be there to see how it goes the FIRST time, anyway…
JDF did the encore!! Good for him

Wow! Go Juan Diego! I’m so happy for him. The audience certainly sounded like they wanted it!
I have never heard his tone so beautiful, pure, and lilting. He’s a marvel.
