I wouldn’t be surprised if Gelb has suggested to JDF that he should feel free to repeat the aria if the mood should strike him. I’m sure that if the first time goes well enough, he’ll do it. The Met audience can always be counted on to give a big ovation so he won’t be lacking for applause.
I think he should but something tells me that the MET won’t allow it … since they almost never allow encores. But I hope I’m wrong because I think it would be thrilling ….
Well, we are in Gelb years now. And even during the no-nonsense Volpe years, they routinely repeated “Va pensiero” whether the ovation warranted it or not.
From the evidence so far, I’d say Gelb knows how to generate press coverage—so no doubt he’s dropped a hint or two that management would look the other way at a violation of the long-standing house rule. It’d certainly be good for Florez to follow up the Scala encore with another at the Met…
Pavarotti was allowed an encore in TOSCA…so there is no reason to deny JDF his moment too. …but I doubt that it will be done for the HD performance on Saturday

Gelb, the showman, not allow what has already become a tradition? Unthinkable. They encore “Va pensiero” whether anybody wants it or not.

Does Met have a spelled out policy on encores?
If anything, the HD is where it makes more sense.
He did it! YAYYY!
