in reviewing the season renewal information that arrived in the mail today, it appears the met has (quietly ... very quietly ... some might say sneakily) discontinued the "instant exchange" option for subscribers. what a giant step BACKWARDS!

i wonder what the process will be, and how rigid they will be about exchanging performances (as opposed to changing dates within a performance).

if this becomes too daunting, i may just ditch my sub and buy single tix for the few items that really stand out.

this is a big disappointment.

And with all of the operas to pick, why do the Met and NYCO both have to do Butterfly within months of each other (other than money)?

My latest table reading said that my table was headed for a fireplace, but that it was compatible with a Taurus. I wonder if that psychic meant a bull or a Ford.

Several posters above seem to know the dates of specific casts. Does anyone know when/where will this information be available for those of us who like to make travel plans?

In fact, they used that technique in the recent Atlanta Cold Sassy Tree, directed by John de Lancie. Of course, it goes more smoothly when you have all native speakers of the libretto's language, but still ...

Darlin, I will promise to stop smokin' weed but if you aren't that troll I refer to you are a soul sister and belong in the ninth circle of Opera-Hell.

I have never patronized a hooker, I have always treated them as an equal which is only right. But a hooker who delivers and works hard to please her clientele deserves respect. And Netrebko has always turned the trick for me! So give the hooker some respect, beeyotch!!

Re two productions mentioned

1 Dr Atomic. It was telecast this year in the Sellars production. Essentially the same physical production I saw in SFO. But I think the opera itself has been tightened but have not had time to compare the video to the audio. As it stands now, IMO. It is a truly great and gripping 1 act opera trapped in a very good - excellent 2 act piece. The aria BATTER MY HEART. THREE PERSON'D GOD is a real barn burner and a gift to future baritones in competition and recital encores.

2. The Dammnation Of Faust production was telecast twice. It is a sensational. Gorgeous and w/ spectacular effects. It gives Marguerite/Graham an exciting exit that will have the audience gasping and cheering her at the end!

Cieca "you sly puss" not fair to get this anciano corazon palpitating by posting a pix of the real divine Angela.

Re Zimmermann ". It’s not because she doesn’t know, he says, it’s a way of making them think about the words." Reminds me of the pyublished story of Marguerita Wallmann trying to get an old Met cast ready for a new, more teatrical/dramatic Aida as opposed to the tired, tried and true and safe routine. At the first rehearsal she gave the assembled cast copies of the libretto and asked them all to just speak and act the words rather than sing them. Milanov looked at the papers. Turned them around, upside dowm, gave an exaggeratd perplexed look, dropped the papers and walked off. The plan was abandoned.

Gaultier Malde. You are so smokin' weed, dude. I have no idea who those people are and I could care less.

You apparently want to think that there could only be one person in the world who doesn't like the hooker and so, therefore, they must all post under 300 different names.

Get over yourself. There are legions in the operaworld who don't like the hooker and her warbling.

But please point me to this Opera l thing as I'd sure like to spice that place up along with the people you mention. Perhaps we can drive you drool shovelers off!

Kiri supposedly was a slow learner and not musically smart. Ditto Pavarotti. Pavarotti also threw the Met into a tizzy when Levine discovered that he had not had his coach with him the summer before he was supposed to add Don Alvaro in "La Forza del Destino" to his Met repertoire. It was discovered that he hadn't studied the role. Volpe decided to change the opera rather than change the tenor. So "Forza" became "Ballo" with Voigt and Juan Pons retained from the "Forza" cast but Denyce Graves and Roberto Scandiuzzi bought out and Quivar and Youngok Shin bought in for Ulrica and Oscar. It was much commented on at the time.

Pavarotti was famous for not being prepared, for one thing he did not read music. He also was unprepared for the adriana recording with sutherland and was replaced by Bergonzi, and most famously for the Gioconda in San Francisco with Scotto, demanding private rehearsals in his hotel. Scotto also tells a fabulous story of a similar experience with this certain large tenor when they did I Lombardi together and he didn't realize he had an aria to sing after his character died.Dreary Kiri was often underprepared and would forget her way through songs at recitals quite often

For those bitching about others not knowing an opera or role, take the case of Pavarotti. Reported widely, he turned up for the Decca recording of the Sutherland Maria Stuarta not knowing the part. Recording was shelved for the next 6 months causing financial losses; and much to the fury of others. Was this the first sign / part of the slow continuing separation of the Sutherland / Bongyne/Pavarotti partnership? I am lead to believe that many of Sutherland recordings by then, were ' seperate production company jobs' THEN sold to Decca under existing contract understanding arrangements. In Breslin's book on Pavarotti, note his comments on Luciano regarding the same subject, even including a non posed photograpph of the tenor at stage rehearsals in London for Un Ballo in Maschera, studying the score.

I am lead to believe that many of Sutherland recordings by then, were ‘ seperate production company jobs’ THEN sold to Decca under existing contract understanding arrangements. In Breslin’s book on Pavarotti, note his comments on Luciano regarding the same subject, even including a non posed photograpph of the tenor at stage rehearsals in London for Un Ballo in Maschera, studying the score.

With the exception of the three Bs (Berlioz, Brewer, Blythe), sounds like a flat season, as others are pointing out. When Mortier gets the NYCO going, he could clean the Met's clock. Still the Met's fare is light years ahead of much what we are getting in Washington next season (e.g., PD conducting the Petite Messe Solennelle with Bocelli.... eew!) Anyway, thanks to La Cieca for her detailed report of the press conference and for the barihunks page. Yum.m.m.

Iain Paterson is a regular at ENO where he's done Fasolt, Colline, Figaro, Leporello, Amonasro and indeed Gunther. He's done some bits parts (Fasolt again etc) at Covent Garden and no doubt around Europe. He has an attractive and rather lyrical bass. Gunther at the Met is a nice move for him, although a surprise to me at least - I hope it goes well.

Gualtier Malde

Iain Patterson:

http://www.intermusica.co.uk/paterson

I've been to the MET Ring on the last two occasions, but with Brewer only doing the Saturday matinee cycle, I think I'll give Gasteen, Morris and West a miss. There are good younger Wagner singers around. I'm just cautious that it is getting a bit late in the day for John Tomlinson, although he was still in great form for the 4 Cycles at the ROH he did in the autumn.

I have also seen the Lepage "Damnation de Faust" in Paris, and it is a brilliant and thrilling production, well worth acquiring no matter how many years ago it was done.

I also agree that gratuitous invective is no substitute for wit and adds nothing to an exchange of views.

This "Mark" aka "Amy" aka "Ariadne1880" is a Netrebko troll from Opera-l. Along with Maria Lamkowska and "ClockXII" or whatever, they never miss a trick to call Netrebko a hooker, a whore, a slut, etc. It is BORING! She is a star, beeyotches and nobody cares what you think about it!

Also Krunoslav, except for the totally necessary importation of Finnish Cardiff Singer of the World winner Tommi Hakala as Schaunard (an appropriate fach for him), there is little "friends of Friend" casting going on here. I am a little piqued by Iain Paterson who will be Gunther in "Goetterdaemmerung". Who is he? Strephon, London Dude, Regina delle Fate can you help me out?

John Tomlinson, Christopher Maltman (yummy!), Barry Banks, Kim Begley (as helden character tenor) and Robert Lloyd are fine artists who would grace any international theater and are well-cast in the parts they have been given.

Well.

Stella is indeed a STAR - and I agree 100% about the offensive (I mean "offending") poster to whom she refers. From the looks of the remaining comments on this blog, it's going to be quite simple for those of us who are actually INTERESTED in MET season to get tickets. Fine by me.
