context is key: kiri

The furore in New Zealand over Dame Kiri te Kanawa‘s apparent criticism of Kiwi popera divette Hayley Westenra may now be on a downward slope after peaking earlier this weekend.

On Saturday night Dame Kiri phoned in to a radio talk show to try to clarify her remarks. Perhaps the most interesting detail is te Kanawa’s insistence that she used the word “fake” as term of art and not a value judgment about the younger singer. Meanwhile Westenra refuses to comment, so it looks like the catfight is a non-starter.

Yeah, I thought that statement about Kiri being know to only a “small cognoscenti” was odd, too, since she was all over PBS for a while. But it’s nice to know I’m a cogniscento (singular of cogniscenti?)

  • Grimgerde says:

Hayley Westenra? World renowned? I may lead a sheltered life, but I have never heard of her until this blogette. And usually one gets to hear of these people whether we like it or not.

  • Regina delle fate says:

Grimgerde – in this case ignorance is bliss!

  • Milan says:

Hm. As a Kiwi Kiri’s comments annoy me.

I don’t know why she performed on Dancing with the Stars last night on a trashy two-bit stage, singing a medley of musical numbers. It was terrible.

    And she used a microphone.

    Ha!

  • opera in the uk says:

I presume she had a microphone to be heard by the audience at home rather than as a crutch to not being able to project over the footlights or ice rink, or whatever she was singing on.

  • Gert says:

Katherine Jenkins’s PR machine has hit back by saying

Katherine sings with a microphone when she needs to. A mezzo soprano’s voice doesn’t develop until she’s in her early 30s. Katherine is looking forward to singing without a microphone in the future.
