This is my belief, in brief

briefs

That grand old man of music André Previn is writing another opera, following up on the clamorous success of 1998's A Streetcar Named Desire. The commission for Houston Grand Opera is Brief Encounter, based on Noel Coward's one-act play Still Life as well as the screenplay for the eponymous film. (First Tennessee Williams, then Noel Coward ... surely a collaboration with Jean Genet is the next logical step!) Well, anyway, the premiere of Brief Encounter, most likely omitting the above imagery, is set for May of 2009. Too long a wait, you say? Well, in the meantime, sit back and enjoy an excerpt from Previn's one universally recognized masterpiece.

You might try typing in "Valley of the Dolls" and "Andre Previn" into Google.

This might actually be a more suitable subject than Streetcar, which was already operatic as a play, it didn't really need music. At least it's not Jake Heggie writing the music....

The David Lean-directed movie was on TCM recently, I'd forgotten what a terrific movie it is.

Or he could do The History Boys, which already has a spot on impression of Celia Johnson and her husband at the end of Brief Encounter.

Can you imagine Renee in sensible shoes and a tweed skirt in the Celia Johnson role?

i'm sorry for my obtuseness. i guess i'm not gay enough (come to think of it, they tried to take my card away a few years back).

i don't know why but i bought the previn CD, the one that battle recorded. the piece he composed (set to toni morrison's poems) wasn't too bad.

Genet's "Querrelle", the opera, as designed by Tom of Finland, manufactured by 2Xist, and starring the Falcon stable. I believe I saw Leo and Lance in that crowd. Wait a moment! I think that was from "the Other Side of Aspen"!

I'll plant my own tree was originally recorded for the film by Judy garland who was originally cast for the Susan Hayward role. She hated the role and got out of the contract but did get to keep the pantssuit which she used in most of her concerts in 68 and 69. As desperate as Judy was for money at this point. even she realized that this was not the role for her, however I am sure Renee could now be cast in the opera version.

Saw an ad in the Chicago Tribune last week that Ren F is going to do some Master Classes in the windy city. Any chance that McNally could do a new version of Master Class based on whatever goes on with our favcrite diva as Teacher?
