Villazón sings again!

La Cieca's dear friend Ed Rosen (doyen of Premiere Opera) sent along a clip from Rolando Villazón's first recital since his return to the stage early this month. According to Ed, "He first sings Massenet's "Ouvre tes yeux," followed by Tosti's "Ideale." Rolando's voice sounds as beautiful as ever! The recital took place in Barcelona on January 13 of this year."

While we're on the subject, do be sure to check out Ed's always fascinating podcast.

We all are happy that Ronaldo is back and in good voice. At age 35, he has many years of singing ahead of him. His replacement at Baden-Baden concert- Ramon Vargas- paled to what it could have been if he were there. The DVD is out and has some interesting singing. Netrebko goes bananas kicking her shoes off, dancing, twirling, flirting, and messing up the concermaster's hair before kissing him. Villazon and Netrebko are teaming up for Romeo et Juliette in Salzburg this summer, hoping he has learned to pace himself.

this is on a mike. still sounds a bit threadbare to me.
as for baden baden, what a hideous self indulgent mess that was. Is she ever going to grow up?

There is still room on Bernard Uzans roster.

She certainly grew up for the ROH Traviata on Saturday night.

Extremely assured and stylish and maybe it was the elegant Winterhalter style frocks and the presence of colleagues such as Jonas Kaufmann and Hvorostovsky that kept her dramtically within bounds.

His voice is only surpassed by how nice a human he is; he sounds wonderful in this clip - thanks for sharing!

Sorry, guys, Rolando's pressured sound gives me a sore throat.

I thought Vargas was absoutely fine in that Baden-Baden concert, but the whole affair was actually rather dull, though Netrebko provides a good cabaret turn.

frustrato,

Come on! You're too harsh on Netrebko. Can she have a little fun? Her antics brought the house down and everybody was happy. What's wrong with that? I'm not a singer, but if you meet them after a perfomance, and I have-including Anna and Pavarotti- they look drained and relieved that it's over and done with. They have nothing to hold on except two folds of tissue- the vocal cords- and try to do the impossible. When a soprano hits a high C the vocal cords can vibrate over 1000 times per seconds! It's a miracle of nature that is accomplished with hard work that may be diffcult to comprehend. Let Netrebko and all the others have fun and a good time once in a while without being critical or judgmental.
By the way, Waldvogel, Netrebko grew up before the ROH- she did it with the 2005 La Traviata of Salzburg.

constantine, you show no pity for those you don't like.

I was at the proms and dislikes it throughly.

This is not a 20 year old, she is a shrewd 36, almpst 40 year old woman running around, kicking off shoes and acting the harrigan always. It is tedious.
As for Kaufman, he is pallid bore.
As for Dimitri, he is becoming someone who bellows.
Glad if she behaved. Couldn't care less.
Pavarotti was the real thing, putting them together is a laugh.
You keep your rosy glasses about your faves and I will keep my eyes clear about the horrid scene of today.

Yes, as distasteful as it is tiresome. Not to mention trivial and misogynistic by 2008 standards. "You HAVEN'T come a long way baby".

Did anyone here know that Cheryl Studer's daughter, Senta Studer, is the lead singer in a pop/rock band, Q.age?

Mio Rolando hardly sounds threadbare but he doesn't sound completely relaxed. Could be nerves, could be anything. Give him time to ease himself into the rigors of performing. I, for one, am thrilled that he's back and hope that he does pace himself more judiciously. He is indeed a sweet man with a kind heart.
For those who read Spanish, an interesting review of this recital appeared on the blog gtl torn t. I disagreed with a couple of his points but the review is a thoughtful discussion, one of the best I've read (he uses one of my favorite Spanish words, "agridulce," meaning bittersweet.).
Here's the link:

Again, fascinating how this thread starts with Villazon, does the usual Netrebko U-turn and winds up with Cheryl Studer's daughter and her rock band.

Not to mention Cheryl Studer's forthcoming Liederabend, which is of more importance and more relevance to the thread than her own daughter's rock band.

How wonderful to learn that Miss Studer continues to dominate the leading stages of European music. They continue to clamor for her in Eindhoven, Groningen and Entschede.

Wasn't Jerez de la Frontera in the Met Young Artists' Program sometime in the mid 90s? I seem to remember her jumping into Mercedes one night when Patricia Risley was ill.

If Jerez next month is insufficient for Herva Nelli, it might interest her that Frau Studer will sing in St. Petersburg in July and in Madrid in August of 2008. Bye.
