Tomorrow is another day
Just a little over 24 hours from now, Rolando Villazón is scheduled to return to the operatic stage following an absence of nearly six months. He is announced for a revival of Werther at the Vienna State Opera tomorrow night, January 5, beginning at 19.30 (1:30 EST). Followup plans for the tenor this month include more Werthers and three performances of Manon plus concerts in Paris and Barcelona.Villazón's highly-anticipated return is the lede for a Times Online article about how opera singers are in risk of becoming "pill-popping stressballs." Much of it is a rehash of the Endrik Wottrich brouhaha from last fall, but there are some interesting bits about how Joyce DiDonato uses Skype for brush-ups with her voice teacher.
Well, anyway, as you can imagine, La Cieca is naturally very curious as to the Villazón's current vocal estate, so she hopes that any of you Old World cher public in attendance at his performances this month will keep us informed.

That's good news. If my "telediagnosis" was right, which I made six months ago, and Ronaldo suffered from hyperactive thyroid, his voice not only won't be affected but it will get better, for shrinking of the thyroid gland will take away any pressure from his larynx and the vocal cords. Altough it was said that he would be off singing for three months, I predicted much longer and six months is about the right time to control hyperthyroidism with radioactive iodine.
Thank you for posting the request, cara. I've been checking operacast and the Staatsoper's web site to see if any broadcasts are scheduled but so far, nada. There's a lot on his plate for January but it slows down afterward, a welcome change from the killer pace he set himself.
I've missed Rolando's singing and his incandenscent presence. Whatever it is/was, I hope he's healing and in superb voice.
Que te mejore!
I am unfortunaly not seeing him before March in recital, but will most certainly report back from that...
I wish him well. He is one of the most gifted young singing actors of this generation. His absence has created a painful void. I just revisited his DVD of L'Elisir d'Amore and he is delightful.
My new found love for opera I never before seen people singing opera and I had tears in my eyes when I heard ronaldo's voice with anna in la traviata although I will probally never get to see such beautiful singing in real life as I live in australia but forever I hold those memories of anna and alfredo in La Traviata thank you for opening my eyes to a whole new way of hearing the human voice god bless them all just hearing ronaldo again would give me goosebumbs all over my hairs on my arms were standing on end just watching the peformace until 2am in the morning I could not leave the television I don't know a lot about the opera as I am only 21 so if any one could give me some information I would love to learn more thank you.
