"Shirtless Teddy Tahu Rhodes Doing Push Ups"

pen palOh, what more delightful headline can be imagined? Well, perhaps "Florida free-fall sends Giuliani from hero to zero" -- that's great news too. But back to important matters. Did La Cieca mention that for his current stint in Dead Man Walking The Teddster has shaved his head?

If only he could sing. He's just another Rodney Gilfry. Someday all opera will be done this way.Thank you David Gockley. Hey Teddy! Peter Gelb is on the line. He wants you to do a new production of Salome. Don't worry they have someone to sing it from the pit. Good on you mate.

Wait a minim. Rhodes can't sing? "Just another Rodney Gilfry?" I may not be the most knowledgeable of opera fans out here, but those don't seem like fair comments. (Like this is a forum for fair comments.) One may prefer Gunn or Keenlyside, but to imply that Rhodes and Gilfry have nothing to offer but good looks is just sour grapes. I have a feeling that if Rhodes were 300 lbs., he'd be cut a little more slack. I completely, utterly and totally abhor the kind of narrow-minded, unimaginative thinking that would get a Deborah Voight fired from Covent Garden, but let's not swing in the opposite direction and deride singers simply because they're blessed with good looks and take care of themselves. Izzy Anderson can't sing. This guy and Gilfry aren't that bad.

MY boyfriend's back and you're gonna be in trouble.... Teddy, don't mind them. You can sing to me anytime you want. And then I have this book we need to study, "Penetrating Wagner's Ring."

Put him in "Thais" as Athanael and let him do a full-frontal nude/masturbation scene in Act 3 during his vision of Thais scene...

Box office stampede.

I have never heard Rhodes, but living large is right about Gilfry - he is "that bad" - my complaint is that he does not really SING - but rather uses a sort of parlando or sprechstimme, and plays fast and loose with his intonation. Very unpleasant. I avoid him like the plague.

But I don't understand why Gockley is to blame for any of the problems afflicting the opera world. Can living large explain?
