Voicewise not bad at all. The costume, though, even from a straight's perspective and aesthetics is atrocious and visually vulgar!

"Voicewise" it is a tragedy. There is no height, beauty, or line to that tone. The rest is a disgrace.

If it wasn't for the music, I would have thought it was "Peter Grimes"!

(I have this DVD and it is a LOT of fun - with music, dance and spectcale entwined delightfully, as Rameau would have recognised. That it does, at times, go over the top in sheer bizarreness is not a problem.)

Beyond a tragedy. Is this a professional singer? But let's all remember this standard the next time Mr. Papas goes off on his Netrebko fixation.

I've seen Mirella Freni in a very similar skirt, as a matter of fact. The production also features Sandrine Piau and Laurent Naouri (husband of N Dessay), and there is a lot of nudity but not in the Zachary Stains sort of way.

whosonfirst,

I don't have a fixation on Netrebko. It's a matter of economics. I'm on Netrebko's payroll like all the British critics- some suggested that they were paid to write their rave reviews of Netrebko's Violetta at CG! And you're right: I over-rated the voice.

Wait a minute, I thought Izzy Anderson was just an 'aspiring' singer. Seems he's been given a role already! My, things move quickly these days.

James Doohan in opera? But I do like me a good Bactrian camel every so often.

This has to be the most egregious example I've seen recently of casting on looks. When this guy first opened his mouth, I thought it was a joke. Honest to gawd, I can't believe they couldn't find a better tenor who'd also look cute in the costume. Just gawd-awful...

I have three thoughts - #1 - Somebody please talk to that boy about lowering his larynx. #2 - At what point in the show does he throw his skirt up over the kneeling troll's head? #3 - If the boy were to spend more time on his knees, then perhaps he would learn about lowering his larynx.

Anon: LOL. It's true! Freni wore a smiliar skirt at the Met's 25th anniversary at Lincoln Centre.

But why don't you people just see the whole thing? There's another boy whose larynx (and other parts) seem to be all in the proper position, and two girls, and two men, and lots of excellent dancers. The second time I saw it was even more fun than the first. As for THIS boy, I don't exactly see him singing Tristan, but who wants a mellifluous WITCH anyway?

Am watching this clip while also watching the State of the Union speech, so am mentally in Another World. I hear Rameau but keep seeing Wagner--Venusberg, a gay Loge in a fire dress, and Grane, and the old man may be Gurnemanz. Maybe the camel is Wotan in one of his disguises.
