The captions are a riot. LOL
actually i think fleming's dress one is very tasteful - but i am not gay, maybe i don't have taste as well ;)
"Straight man with taste" used to be an oxymoron, but is now called a metrosexual. I like that first Renaaaayyy dress, too.
The first Fleming dress demonstrates the fine line between good and bad taste. If the black wraparound stole-like thing were about a third the size it is in the picture it would be perfectly fine. As it is ....
I would also like the silver dress without the butt cut-outs and the negligee thing might look good on someone (just not her).
The rest is a real horror show though.
The worst one of all has got to be Jessye Norman's blue Star Trek choir robe number.
Mattila's polka dotted number with the sequined gloves is just bizarre.
Is it Netrebko in the silver thing? Typical slavic harlot look.
you bitches don't know what you talking about. ewa looks great considering what she usually wears. that is actually a very bold and daring dress.
now kathy's globe shoulders -- i remember that concert, when poor fredericka had to stand a few meters away from that cow because of those stupid puffy sleeves.
jessye had on a marvelous medieval multi-layered japanese kimono (without obi, sashes or belts) once for one of those NY Phil. concerts, i think it was one of those new year's eve concerts. she was faboo that night.
I've never understood that saying about badly-dressed divas having no gay friends...who else but a gay man would design or pick those dresses?? ;)
Who is the Peta woman?
Cieca, you now have me visiting this site at least 4 times per day! I love all of this!
How appropriate that Waltraud Meier (a singer whose voice I have always found both matronly and shallow) should here be associated with 'Leave it to Beaver' ... I hear she has done so on many occasions.
After watching the Jessye and Kathy show ±15 years ago, a friend commented that they both looked as though they'd been upholstered rather than dressed.
If by PETA woman, you mean the orange shmatte with the fur collar, that's Erika Miklosa, the Queen of the Night from the Met HD broadcast.
Rysanekfreak, I sympathize. I was addicted to this since long before I was laid off on 01/03/08, but since then? I check my email and this site all day long. But that was before I heard about Manhunt. I didn't realize that there were still gay porn sites that I hadn't plummed the depths of yet. Now I will have to split my days between La Cieca and Manhunt. And men4now. And Hunkhunter's Haunts. And SX video theater. And Treasure Island Streaming Video.
I'm pretty sure that black dress Renee is wearing is by John Galliano for Christian Dior.
I remember that 'previous' season dress was one of his 'HAHA - I was so off my face when I designed this' dresses that I don't think he actually expected to sell any of them!
And Galliano being Galliano - I doubt he 'gave' or 'lent' this dress to Renee which means that Flemball had to have dished out at least $20,000 for what had to have been the worst dress he sent out that season!
I can't seem to find Kiri's mirrorball dress for a Proms on Google Images, nor Renee's tin-foil dress worn on a EuroCup Performance...
I remember seeing Blythe in that sofa upholstery at the Volpe Gala and screaming " WWWWWWHHHHHHYYYYY"???????
Big gals need sequins !!!!!
Is that Denyce Graves dressed as a giant fish?
If you want something that beats all of the above, Kiri at Prince Charles and Diana's wedding.
I'm afraid I can't find an image, though I am sure somebody will oblige.
It was obviously before she found her look. A sort of Coco the Clown meets Mrs Bucket with mutli-coloured make up.
It had to have been obviously before she found her look, because there was no after; she never did find her look.
Denyce gets away with that slinky look, and it helps one forget her voice stops at about F.
Who dresses these women? I mean, don't they have any judgement of their own? Don't they know how or when to say NO? And I am not talking Fach.
That Stephanie Blythe number does look like upholstery from something you might find on a wing back chair at Ethan Allen.
"After watching the Jessye and Kathy show ±15 years ago, a friend commented that they both looked as though they'd been upholstered rather than dressed."
One of my friends called that show "The Mountain and the Molehill."
Many many years ago, I saw Battle perform with the Cincinnati Symphony, wearing a lovely indigo taffeta silk gown sans pouffes for sleeves. It was elegant and afterwards in the green room, she sported a stylish wool suit, so the lady is not--or perhaps, was not--without fashion smarts.
Jennifer Larmore gave a recital here last week and in the first half, wore a clingy iridescent red/gold sheath with a strange fabric construction that was supposed to be a double for sleeves. I heard more about that during intermission than about her wonderful first half. She came back in a black sheath and white sequined jacket that garnered raves--as did her marvelous performance.
Am I missing something, or did the captions disappear?
kathy battle is known for her extravagant and daring gowns -- she was always "HIGH couture" type lady. maybe they were ugly but they were not cheap. did you all remember the cover of her carnegie hall CD -- the blue and white number with all those stiff folds? they had a special box made for that dress. if i recall this, her couturier was someone with a long armenian name (ter-arutunian?)
Stella! STELLA!! So much for my Marlon Brando impersonation. You have a good memory, my dear; heis name is Rouben Ter-Arutunian, and his career goes back to the 40s. He emigrated here in the 50's and won a Tony Award for Redhead (with the late, lamented Gwen Verdon) in 1958. He died in 1992.
I miss the captions too!
RE: Fleming's dresses
I remember the first one from the Levine gala. Aside from looking like she had a gragoyle on her shoulder, I recall her very aloof demeanor as she sang the Rosenkavalier trio with Anne-Sofie von Otter (and I forget the other soprano). During the bows, Anne-Sofie and the other soprano took eachother's and Anne-Sofie reached over to Renee. And Renee just looked straight ahead and didn't even glance her direction and certainly didn't offer her hand. And frankly, that's odd considering I've always heard that she's a super-nice person.
Her second dress from the Volpe Gala I actually like. She had clearly lost some weight and the dress showed off her figure very nicely.
re: kiri's dress at the royal wedding
what are you talking about? if i recall correctly, kiri had a blue suit and hat, and she sang handel's something "bright seraphim?" i don't recall that she wore something particularly horrendous, but then i wasn't paying attention (i was 9 at the time, i think). i remember thinking at the time, how odd, she has a polynesian name, but she's blonde...
as for kathy's CH recital dress, it wasn't white and blue, but mostly white, does anyone know what i'm talking about? i'll have to go home and dig up that CD. it was a stunning dress, with crazy geometric shapes. i'm not a fashion person, i can't describe these things...
Love her though I do, even I can't pretend Madame Podles has a lot going on in the fashion department. It may be part of the reason I dote on her. I mean, the pictured gown beats the hell out of the matching "boy aria"/"girl aria" sequin dress and pantsuit that have done so many years of honorable service now.
Did Kiri sing at Chuck and Di's wedding or was it at Anne's? And who is the diva in the green garb with the 3 on the side? Is she a Nascar fan?
that's gheorgiu. if you click on the slide show, you get to the photobucket website, where tihs gallery is stored.
yes, kiri sang at the C&D wedding, i remember that clearly. she sang that handel aria about the bright seraphim.
oh, here's the kathy dress i was thinking of. too bad the pic doesn't show the bottom of it.

And the (sadly) late Arleen Auger sang at Andrew's and Fergie's, but I don't remember what she wore.
