Cessa di più eseguire?

La Cieca hears that, beginning tonight, Jose Manuel Zapata will omit Almaviva's final aria from the remaining performances of Il barbiere di Siviglia this season at the Met.

Thank goodness! I heard him at the Met last Saturday and the whole role was sung out of tune and his sound was tired, entirely in the nose, and altogether weak. I was appalled that he was even singing with the company. Trust me, nobody will be missing out on anything.

I heard the radio broadcast and I trust he is the one who sang at that performance. I was a bit shocked by his intonation problems. I marvelled at the fact that the other singers who were singing with him could even find a key. That's how out of tune I thought he was.

I have to add another thing. And forgive me for saying this. I don't much care for the final aria. It is too much...it is too long...we have to cut something...

I hate to say this, beause I love the aria, but there is a reason is was usually cut for the majority of the 20th century: It is insanely dificult. I love it as much as the next guy, but if you don't have someone who can do it justice, which very few people these days (or ever) can, then cutting it is not too much of a loss.

I totally agree that if you don't have a tenor like Juan Diego, the aria should be cut. If we had a few more like him, I'd suggest that the Met mount Rossini's Otello for him, with Di Donato as Desdemona.

About damned time. He's sounded awful the entire run. And for the opening performances, etc., Zapata's poor cover was yanked round and round. Zapata shouldn't have sung opening night...and hasn't gotten better. That last aria was pretty laborious.

Brownless sang it well last season, however...with color, verve, and a lack of nasality of a certain "star" tenor.

Anonymous, surely you're not saying that Lawrence Brownlee's Almaviva was superior to that of a MAJOR RECODING STAR??? How is that possible? That's like pointing out that MAJOR RECORDING STAR Elina Garanca doesn't sing Rosina as well as Theodora Hanslowe.

Actually, Nerva,

I don't give a rat's ass who has recordings or not. Brownless doesn't have the crass nasality of Florez so yes, I like him more. I don't get wet over Florez like you guys do.

And I like Garanca quite a bit, but I'm not a huge fan of her Rosina. I'd much prefer her as Charlotte (which San Francisco will get) or Adalgisa (which she's done in Europe). She's a fine Rosina...but I'd rather her Di Donato in the role and hear Garanca in others.

I don't care who recording companies like for PR reasons (I don't like Netrebko either). I care about singing...and the voice.

You can choose as you wish.

Alas, Brownlee (not less) also sang in the body of a short, stout guy who reminded me of a black Richard Tucker with less acting ability.

I'll take Florez' supposed "nasalness."

No one can touch him ... except me, of course.
