Bess, is you our woman now?
Or, to put it another way, could this soprano be what the Met needs for Roberto Devereux?
While you ponder the future, you can enjoy the past: the final act of Verdi’s Macbeth is now on Unnatural Acts of Opera.

Pendatchanska in Devereux. Very exciting, though it is not a conventionally pretty sound … But then Dessay doesn’t really have a pretty sound either – and it’s less distinctive than this.
I also think it might be Pendachanska. There is a DVD of her in Devereux which I would very much like to see. I’ve heard that she’s had vocal troubles lately. Her last Rossini role at NYCO wasn’t a big success, if I recall.
I haven’t heard much of Radvanovsky in florid music but I definitely like her voice for the role of Elisabetta. However, I don’t think that Gelb considers her a star.
No, Radvanovsky would not be good as Elisabetta, and I don’t think much of the singing in the clip posted either, whoever it is, BUT, thank you Cieca for giving us something to consider.
I don’t care for it either- I’m fine with ‘unconventional’ voices, but not when the high notes sound like Kath Najimy in ‘Sister Act’.
I agree this is not Sondra’s best singing. I have just seen on youtube a clip of a Roberto Devereux in concert with Maria Pia Piscatelli; quite good. But also you must check out Annik Massis ‘s live in concert Casta Diva again on youtube. In a few years I know she could sink her teeth into Devereux. After all the best one was a high soprano; Sills and then Caballe of course. Bigger voices don’t meet the vocal lines and agility challenges of the role
