And don't call her Shirley! It's the one and only Ruby Hinds singing the cabaletta to "O mio Fernando" at a tribute to Doris Roberts (yeah, go figure) in Beverly Hills.
Who the hell is that?...Peter Gelb will never engage him...One more appeal,,,,I am in LOVE with Peter Gelb...can someone here help me meet him or make my feelings known?
I was in a production of Carmen at Lake George Opera some 27 years ago in which Ruby Hinds was the cover for Carmen and played Mercedes (or is it Frasquita???) so this is what happened to her.(Melenie Sonnenberg was the Carmen and I think Joey Evans the Don Jose) I had the pleasure of being a soldier, gypsy and bull fighter.
i have heard that this lady sang adalgisa to her sister esther's norma once. interesting, 2 real life sisters as N&A (and i think a 3rd sister was the clotilde).
if you want to hear an even more masculine sounding lady, check out gail gilmore's amneris on youtube. amazingly enough, she also sings soprano roles.
I haven't checked the key but it seems like because of a lack of high notes, she has transposed this piece down. So those low chest notes are even lower than usual. Yikes!
Bruce, David Lloyd had already left Lake George Opera Festival a few seasons earlier. Paulette Nolen and her husband the baritone Timothy Nolen were the artistic directors then. a few years earlier a production of Carmen featured David Lloyd's daughter-in-law, Teresa Treadway. Paulette Nolen also did a Pagliacci in 81 I believe in Italian (a first at Lake George, everything was done in English) with Diana Soviero, Richard Versalle (of Makrapolous Case Fame - he died a few minutes into the opening) Many very fine singers were up there in those days, Diana Soviero, Henry Price, Eleanor Berquist, Donnie Ray Albert, Jerry Hadley, Timothy Nolen and a memorable production of Porgy and Bess with William Warfield. My favorite was a FAUST with Soviero, Donnie Ray Albert and three different Fausts, Hadley being the second cover. They did about five productions each summer with a seven or eight week season. They seem to have basically disappeared off the map now.I was a super in several of their productions including that great work LAST OF THE MOHICANS
paddypig-- thanks for the info...I would love to chat with you more...i studied with both David Lloyd and Warfield at the univeristy of Illinois and of course I was in classes with dear Jerry Hadley and Erie Mills...can we chat?

At first I thought that must be a baritone in drag...

Why not let him know yourself? Send him love notes at work. Send flowers. He'll get the idea.

What does this have to do with Doris Roberts?

Too bad the piano didn't go with her.
