Wonderful, I just watched Liebestod from the same performance...Meier is absolutely wonderful!! The production looks good too...I can't wait to get this on DVD! BRAVO!
In creating a staging of Act 1, how much groping of each other are I and T supposed to be doing, and how much are the sailors supposed to be figuring out that something is wrong with these two, without someone in the audience wondering why a gabby sailor would not spill the secret to the King? I assume Melot has figured out that something is wrong.

When would a gabby sailor have the chance to talk to the king?
I actually think the idea of everybody noticing that T&I have a thing goin' on (so that it's common knowledge to everyone _but_ the king) makes a certain amount of sense. I certainly have experience with people at the top not realizing something going on under their nose that everybody else is aware of. It also highlights Marke's isolation and cluelessness.
The question is is having T&I so physically obsessed with each other really the point of an opera about a spiritual obsession?
Grey overcoats. Every production in Europe has dark gray overcoats. Well, unless they have clowns. Surely at some point some innovative director will have clowns in dark gray overcoats.
This looked pretty good! (Except for the gray overcoat and the fact that it looks like Isolde is sailing in the hold of an oil tanker.)
