Honestly, when I saw that picture, my first thought was it something starring Charles Busch.

Good god, is that Guleghina?
She doesn't sound that bad but talk about the wrong voice for a role.

Where is this from? and does anyone have the complete aria?

I was not unimpressed by her singing, though I would like to hear more. She articulates the notes in "Gioir! Gioir!" rather well, but this has to be the loudest Violetta in history. Now if we could only unearth a video of Kristen Chenoweth as Elektra, my day would be made.

As one of the little people sitting out here in the dark, I can say that at the moment she launches into sempre libera she really DOES look like crazy Norma Desmond.

And we're worried about Fleming singing Norma! This Violetta was dead in Act I.

MG as Mary Todd Lincoln perhaps? She looks nuts for sure.

I'm guessing it's a production of The Rake's Progress. Not sure why Ann Truelove is costumed in a potato sack, but ... that's eurotrash!

To say nothing of pitch and tempo- how God awful. Who the hell is she?

Wow, that's the most spinto-ish "Sempre libera" I've ever heard. It must be from quite a few years ago; she's far more precise in this than today.

kashania,

I think is sacrlegious and a blasphemy, musically speaking, to use a music term like "spinto" in this case. Her singing is screamo scratchioso fortissimo!

I think I am in the "kind-of-intrigued" camp as well. The clip wasn't really long enough for me to get a sense of it, but my first thought was, how the HELL could she get through the rest of the show?!!??! There were some screechy sounds, but there were some really nice ones too. Hmmmmmm...

Whoa....now THAT is unexpected...and filthy. That Db sounded like a chicken having her eggs forcibly removed with tongs. I wonder if she had any voice left for Addio del Passato. Think she tried for the Eb? LOL. What a thought.

if you enjoyed that, please check out the soprano ofelia hristova whose vids litter youtube like cigarette butts at the beach. what is it about slavic screamers who seem happy to approximate the notes as long as they're sung loud?

To quote the Alfredo from the Who's Afraid of Opera La Traviata, "You can't go on like this."

Klytia, I just checked out Hristova's "Casta Diva." Me-ouch! It's like an operatic version of Bernadette Peters. She does realize she's allowed to open her mouth, right?

Maria Guleghina as Violetta, hahahahaha. Even at that SLOOOOW tempo it's too insistent on her voice.

I wonder if there's a video of her out there somewhere in her early days singing Adina.....

Willym: LOL!

I wonder if there's a recording of Guleghina singing "Caro nome" or the Doll's aria from Hoffman?

Put me in the camp of those who are very intrigued (in a very strange way).

Millo at one time wanted to show the world a large-voiced violetta
I guess maria beat her to the punch. Maybe next she can show us a big voiced oscar, or maybe even a sophie!

The voice is a good size for Viloetta it isn't being used well. And the little I saw of Millo in Pavarotti Plus brindisi suggested she might very well have a great violetta to share.

Wouldn't she be a great Lakme? This is another reason why I listen to older Verdi recordings, like the Moffo Luisa Miller, or Caballe's Giovanna D'Arco; I hate squally voices in Bel Canto.

Julio - mits off la Marton! She might be guilty of a few tiny technicalities on occasions - but she's nothing like this train wreck.

This isn't just a big-voiced Violetta; it's an agressively loud Violetta.

Hum, she looks like a linebacker in that dress.

As far as the singing, well, it has the virtue of being ballsy… And it is on pitch. Not very delicate though.

I am not sure she looks exhausted and dying from consumption. Maybe in this version, Violetta gets hit by a truck (which I am fairly sure is the only way to stop la Screecherina – or is it a silver bullet?)
