From the 1978 film of Götz Friedrich's production of Tannhäuser -- alas, not currently available on DVD. Dame Gwyneth Jones is the lady asking the rather personal question.
I remember that production on TV! Jones sang both Venus and Elisabeth. She was in a body stocking in the Venusberg (T's masturbation fantasy of Elisabeth in this version), and my friend Chris stared at the set, eyes wide.
"Are those HER tits?" he cried.
"No," I said, "they're MINE. But they don't go with a thing I own, and I said, 'Gwyneth, TAKE them.'"
Spas Wenkoff sounded a decent Tannhauser in that telecast, on which account the Met hired him for Tristan. Oooooh, was that foul! (It was one of Gwyneth's memorable: "Pitch, I know there's a pitch here somewhere" evenings too.) Exit Wenkoff, expelled from NYC like an explosive fart. I actually didn't stay for Act III -- a total stranger beside me during Act II outrageously dared to stick his hand in my crotch throughout the Liebesnacht and I fled into the night. With him. Why doesn't this happen more often at ghastly performances? The Lucia this year, for instance....
Gran Dio! and she's inherited the wobble as well. Jones fille actually features as the Prince of Persia in the ROH video of Turandot, although I don't think the off stage scream is hers...
The most coked-out Tannhauser still remains the Munich with Meier in my book. I couldn't even make it through the Venusberg--surely a case to legalize marijuana, if nothing else so as to watch some operas.
Its great to see la Jones' daughter following in Mum's huge footsteps- I just hope they don't overwork that very young and still developing voice of hers- in the lower range there is still not much there, hardly appropriate for a good "Delilah" but in a crap production like the one on youtube by director Hendrik Müller, the whole thing is so horrible it doesn't matter who plays what- I would have walked out regardless. Muller should be thrown from the nearest bridge or be charged with murder of a great work - what a load of junk! Please keep him in Europe- don't want him down here.
I love the way she's got out in her Sunday best- evening gown, drop earings and all - and then gets filmed standing next to a fire hydrant sign!!!! You'd think someone would have stuck a bunch of flowers in front of it or something :) apart from that she's not too bad- I think with the right teacher more of a soprano emerging than a mezzo.
stella barbare: are you clicking on the right link? Don't click on "youtube" but rather on "1978 film" in the text of the post, and it should work.
This is one of my very favorite videos (I have it on VHS), and Spas Wenkoff's performance was quite fine and moving. It's too bad this success was followed by failure and oblivion.
Stella, The picture of G. Jones is just a still picture, not a link to YouTube like some of the others. You need to go up above the photo to where LaCieca introduces it, and click on the text "1978 film". I also use IE and that takes me directly to the clip (which is very much worth the trouble, by the way).
specibo for your writing back. i should have said, that i found it by doing a search on youtube. i was a bit puzzled because usually our supreme L'Aveugle usually provides a link from the pic -- with a "play" icon on it. i should have noticed the "1978" was in a different color, i.e., a link. i'm usually not this stupid, but it must be my infirm old age (41) catching up with me.
i know a czech boy named pavel that i love -- i'm sure you are not him (and no, his last name is not novotny).
(oh and btw, the book is "kite runner," not "kite racer.")

Ah, the good old times when one could meet companions for after-the-performance fun.
I have heard "meeting after-performance companions" still happens but less frequently to those who used to be "in demand" in the 60s and 70s.
It hasn't happened to me since 2003, I admit....
why isn't this made available!!!!
What a fabulous clip! I miss the warmth of a mezzo on the low parts but she's terrific nonetheless.
Oh look, a Eurotrash semi-staging featuring Dame Gwyneth's daughter. Yes, really ...

Happy New Year to one and all!
i'm told sharon sweet's daughter is a promising lyric soprano (alas, not a dramatic like her mommy). does anyone know?
Happy new year to everyone here! This has been a fantastic New Year´s Eve hearing Polenzani´s Roméo on Sirius!
Is Sharon Sweet's daughter as fat as she is?
and sweet's son is quite the cello player as well. happy new year to all, most especially our doyenne! alla cieca!

OK, I know this is totally off topic, and I hate that because I ADORE Gwyneth....but watch this link:

She's got a webpage that says she's a mezzo, but I think she sounds liks a man.
Anyone else have an opinion?

hey bolshoipavel and la cieca;
at least on internet explorer, there's nothing to click, there's no "play" icon or any other link on the pic of g.jones.
