And all he said was "woof"
In a controversial performance (condemned by Stephen Colbert, praised by Andrew Sullivan), bass-bearitone Kurt Rydl grrrrowls the role of Hagen.
Legendary diva Rosa Ponselle was so impressed by this Götterdämmerung that she dedicated an encore song to Herr Rydl.
The (ahem) versatile basso replied with a video tribute to Nancy Sinatra:

You are on a roll this Fall!!!!! Thank you for the great postings and youtube has made it all better!
I have to say, his behaviour in the last video is very Un-Austrian! Well perhaps u-Vienese? Aber was fuer ein niedlichen Baerchen!
Thanks again la Cieca and keep up the hard work!
We out here in un-opera-land are grateful!
Best,
Drew
p.s. If I may put in a request. I love the mozart Coloratura Concert Arias. I think I have heard all the good CDs easily availible (Gruby and Dessay, Sills and Sutherland and Mosers version of Popoli and everything on youtube where I saw Deiree Rancatore do my fav K368.) if you find any rare, new or fabulous versions (filth or dementia) of Mozart Coloratura Concert Arias I will be even more of a fan and more grateful.....you definately have connections to things I can't get out here.....but even now I am very happy and impressed with all the other good stuff. Thanks for keeping us entertained!
I saw Rydl last spring in Turin (as King Marke) and he was amazing. Total master class.
So are we meant to infer by this that Rydll is gay, or am I just being an idiot.
Now, Baritenor! A big, hairy man who enjoys dressing up in a maillot and turban and lip-synching to Nancy Sinatra -- what's gay about that?
Words fail me. He could be both the ideal leather bear daddy and the ideal leather bear mommy!.
kurt rydl had a well publicized (and 'luckily' shortlived) love affair a couple of years ago with a german singer, who i dare not call soprano, as she is the kind of german charlotte church. named sandra schwarzhaupt she was born in 1978 whereas he is was born in 1947. she was in her late teens or early twens so it was kinda weird (albeit completely legal of course!) ... and defo not in a good way!!!
didnt last long obviously and didnt do much to push her career much either. nor did it do much grace to hers....
andrew sullivan is an idiot. i saw him in the street once, he was so ugly... no wonder he gets in bed with the likes of ann coulter, pat buchanan, etc. puke.
That's quite a wobble he's sporting but I can't help but admire his Hagen just the same. Rather intense.
Rydl was a superb Hagen in London last week (contrary to my expectations which were based mainly on his Amsterdam performances shown above). He really commanded the stage. And the wobble seen above was virtually non-existing.
