The season begins. Finally.

"The Metropolitan Opera's opening week offered two super-starry nights that more than offset a misfired new production across the plaza at the New York City Opera." After some rather frustrating technical delays, our JJ's reviews of the Met's Roméo and Lucia, plus the NYCO's Cav/Pag, are at last online at Gay City News. (Perhaps at this point they can be read for historical significance, if nothing else.)

I attended the 29th of September performance of Remeo et Juliette, and your critique is right on the money: honest, precise and educational. Bravo!

My dear La Cieca,

As a person who has sat/slogged through production after tired-ass production at NYCO (sometimes just to support opera, any opera)I whole-heartedly agree with your review of Cav/Pag. Clearly that house has been running on the fumes of yesteryear for a while. One hopes that we won't be subject to Lawless, Lamos et al productions once La Mortier arrives. But hey ya never miss what you had till it's gone.

I await your future reviews of this season. Hmmmm could somebody bump off Tomassini and give you his job?

La Cieca -

Well, I can hardly remember these productions - lol - yes, I noticed your little "dig". Kidding aside, these are superb reviews (Lucia and Romeo - I didn't see the Cav/Pag). You captured the essence of the MET productions - and thank God you focused on the singing (a pleasant change from so many production-centric reviews in other publications). Thanks for sharing.
