"Bizarre and nondescript characters corralled from every stratum of society"
La Cieca thanks the visiting Enzo Bordello for pointing out to her some recent updates to the indispensable Met Futures Page so painstakingly maintained by Bradley Wilber. Most of it sound plausible enough, but every now and then a piece of casting leaves La Cieca so stunned she hardly manage to quote a Waldo Lydecker quip. Such is the case with a projected 2009 revival of Adriana Lecouvreur with Maria Guleghina and Jonas Kaufmann.
That show at least seems possible actually to transpire, unlike the new Carmen in 2010. The announced team for the Bizet, which includes Matthew Bourne, Richard Eyre, Angela Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna, Barbara Fritolli and James Levine, surely adds up to ten pounds of diva in a five pound bag!

Cavalleria Rusticana/ Pagliacci
with Roberto Alagna, Nuccia Focile (Nedda), Ambrogio Maestri (Tonio) c. Pietro Rizzi (d)
Oh, this it is great that the Met is casting Alagna as Beppe. I wonder who will sing Turriddu and Canio and Santuzza.
now here's the thing ... i rather like maria guleghina ... but look at her met repertoire:
norma
lady macbeth
adriana lecouvreur
turandot
queen of spades
that's kind of insane.
some other questions/points:
is zimmerman still directing sonnambula?
that's actually a pretty great ring cast.
thomas hampson could barely sing athanael in chicago years ago. yikes.
who will be laura in the giocondas?
i wouldn't be surprised if david daniels winds up in at least some of bejun metha's orfeos.
you're all going to love juha uusitalo as jochanaan and dutchman. he was in the SFO samson et dalila and is riveting.
nuccia focile is going to steal the show as nedda.
really glad renee is doing rosenkavalier again.
jennifer larmore IS gertrude.
what do we know about anette dasch and/or emma bell (two debutant countesses)
VERY excited for olga in damnation de faust
is pat racette singing suor angelica only? or might she dare all three???
very glad the nose is coming to the met.
who is singing the title role in lady macbeth of mtsensk????
how the hell is anna netrebko going to sing olympia?????
wait for guleghina to be announced in fanciulla? i actually think this is a wonderful role for voigt with the right director.
very excited to see comte ory onstage!
and then there's 2011 when the rapture comes in the guise of renee as norma ....
love metfutures!
i was wondering what was taking so long for everyone to notice it had been updated!
i assume brewer is singing isolde next year?
is borodina really doing another carmen next year also?
damrau should be singing lucia instead of anna
soooo excited about karita's return as salome
i'll believe the adriana when I see it....perhaps gheorghiu should sing it. After all she did state a desire to lol.
all the trittico heroines are being sung by racette if I remember correctly
I second the comments about voigt as minnie...it could be quite exciting!
Nina Stemme is doing LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK....
I actually don't think any of those roles are insane for GULEGHINA except for the NORMA and, thankfully, Gelb gave half of those to Hasmik Papian this season. I think she'll be good as Lady Macbeth...I have heard her sing a sensational Lisa in Pique Dame...and Turandot should be a good fit with her bulldozer approach and strong top...Adriana is not a very difficult role to sing--which is why a lot aging divas love it.
As for Fanciulla, I hear Gelb is trying to talk Mattila into doing it, which I would prefer to both Voigt and Guleghina...
Dalayman is moving over from Brangane (which she sang both times the Dorn production has been done previously) to sing Isolde...
she sang her first Brunnhildes this year to great acclaim..
Brewer is only doing the Brunhildes next season..
Why not Millo in Adriana? It fits her vocal state, so probably she would not cancel, and if ever a production needed her sense of style... but as others have said, I'll believe it when I see it.
Brava La Cieca for the quote from Laura one of my favourite films!
Does the Met's production even still exist. It reeked of mothballs and bad repainting in the early eighties when I saw in on tour with Zylis-Gara and Shicoff in Minneapolis. Even then the sets looked liked they could have been taken out by an errant high b-flat. I would assume if they're doing it it has to be borrowed from somewhere - but who's even mounted it recently?
A Licitra Manrico? Veys mir! I shudder to think...But nice to see Naynay in home territory...
Benvenuto Cellini again in 09-10? Why repeat the same mistake twice?!!
Expect the Finnish all-star Salome to be up for HD/DVD...especially since the Met currently has "no plans" to release the taping they did back in 2004...also Karita is on the record saying that Minnie (and Sieglinde) would interest her...but with the right conductor, etc.
Luisi leading a Frau Ohne Schatten?! After Aegyptische, HELL YES!! But why must they assign Benini to all the Rossini? His obsession with "light and fast" seemed frantic and ultimately unexciting in Barbiere.
I'm curious about the di Luna and the Frau ohne Schatten cast (which I am very happy to see on the schedule!).... any rumors?
dear doug,
annette dasch has sun gluck's armide to good acclaim in salzburg this summer and i have seen her in concert as the countess under renee jacobs. it is a lyric but powerful voice and i really thought she brought a youthfulness to the countess that is often missing.
emma bell has been at the komishce oper in berlin for a while and in the uk she is well known for her mozart (she was a riveting vitellia in clemenza at the ENO! such a huge voice!), although most recently she sang handels rodelinda in concert (a role which i think she has sung for glyndebourne on tour as well). it is a voice with lots of dramatic flair but not a robust voice...
should be interesting to see how their voices work in such a big space as the met. i presume bell (she actually won the kathleen ferrier competition in the late 90s) will have no problems projecting there. we here in the uk can look forward to her elettra in idomeneo in concert next spring!
there are two cds of bell available (one with strauss/marx songs and one with handel arias) and also two of dasch (one with barpque songs and one with arias surrounding the different armida operas) ... should be on any of the amazons (.com, .co.uk or .de)
Where's "Porgy and Bess" and "Bluebeard's Castle"? And isn't the Met overdue for new productions of the Zefferelli mainstays? And how about a new production of "Die Fledermaus"?
