To while away the tedious time of waiting for the next season of Metropolitan Opera HD transmissions, here’s a montage recalling the first two decades (1977-1998) of “Live from the Met” and “Metropolitan Opera Presents” telecasts:
This YouTube video originated on the MetManiac site back in 1998.
Has there been any movement about getting these broadcasts commercially available? Didn’t Gelb say over a year ago that all this past material would be released… I want answers Peter!
Now that we have seen clips from 25 years of Met on TV, let’s have clips from each of the operas showing the characters Charles Anthony played. (Also, I think Paul Plishka was the Falstaff.)

For those who feel like cheating, you can go to the Met Database search page and enter the word “telecast” as a search term. Then you can click through the results list for details, e.g.,

Machito: Here are few blanks filled in
8 is Pavarotti/Mitchell in Ernani
There are a few clips missing between 26 & 27
33 I think that this is Pavarotti/Mitchell in Ernani again
34 is Price in Forza, not Norman
The Milnes/Tomowa-Sintow clip is from Simon
40 is Rysanek as Ortrud
56 is Norman in Erwarthung
57 is Morris/Behrens Walküre
59 is Ramey/Upshaw in Don Giovanni
63 looks like Horne
78 Te Kanawa/Brendel in Arabella
80 Te Kanawa/Chernov in Simon
81 Domingo/Fleming Otell
82 looks like Despina in Cosi
83 is Nucci/what’s-his-name in Forza
Siegfried Jerusalem as Parifal is in there, Plishka’s Falstaff, and is the tiny clip of the dancing veiled women from Ghosts of Versailles?
Thought I spotted Horne as the Italian Girl, Bacquier as Schicci, Dolora as Azucena, and Millo as Aida. The telecast listing has an early telecast of Manon with Scotto, but I don’t spot her.
It was Manon Lescaut, from March 1980
Scotto’s Manon L. is right before Lulu with her gun. Now, who is the lady giving the Italian curse gesture rubbing her chin?
