Teresa Stich-Randall 1927-2007

The American soprano, whose voice Toscanini called “the find of the century,” died Tuesday in Vienna.

She is heard here singing “Crudele… Non mi dir” from a 1960 performance of Don Giovanni.

I really enjoy Stich-Randall’s Sophie on the Karajan recording. My only problem is at the climax of the trio (gorgeously sung up to that point) where her vibrato-less high note just weighs down the whole piece and ruins the mood. However, I split the blame between her and the recording engineers who, for some odd reason, decide to pump up her voice at that moment so that the notes jumps out at the listener (in a most unpleasant manner). Otherwise, her Sophie is just lovely.
