It looks like the Met was dark tonight... Anyone know what is going on? Was this planned all along, and how often does it happen to have a dark day in the middle of the season?
Next season is going to have even more "dark nights" at the Met in the middle of the week. Some folks are trying to explain it as necessary because of the exhausting tech rehearsals on the orchestra and stagehands.
What are they rehearsing now? "Orfeo ed Euridice"?
This is just deduction, but Gelb has added new productions to a schedule that was devised several years ago. As such, time had to be found for additional technical rehearsals, and all the available "daytime" slots were booked.
A few dark nights during the season doesn't bother me; in fact I think it makes sense to cut back a little on midweek performances if these nights don't sell.
La Cieca, I think you are completely right. I think perhaps the Met should reconsider their block schedule. Why not have a few dark days on Monday so they can add some Sunday afternoon performances? It just shocked me because I cannot recall when the last time I witnessed a dark night in the middle of the season at the Met was...
By the way, thank you so much for the Gala Podcast. I love it!
I hope I don't come off like a complete philistine here, but what was the aria that Callas presented in the first part?
who was at La Millo's performance last night??
Why Netrebko's name is not on the list of superstars? For Mattila's Carnegie Hall recital many tickets in various prices were still available up to the time of the performance. For Netrebko's 30th of May debut recital tickets were sold out within hours. Don't get me wrong. Mattila is one of the finest sopranos around. On the other hand, Netrebko has brought something special and mystical opera has been waiting for a long time, and that's why her performances are consistently sold out. This is not hype and in all fairness, she should have been included and not ignored.
I think La Cieca can invite whomever she pleases to her own gala. And I think it's only fitting that she had more big names than Levine or Volpe for their galas. LOL
I've only listened to part 1 which is very good but I wish that there weren't quite so much pop music. For example, the Sutherland clip is fun kitsch and all but it would have been much more exciting to hear her sing a big bel canto showpiece.
And for La Cieca's next gala, I think it would be fun to announce the singers one by one and even describe what they're wearing.
The Rivers mother and daughter might be available for red carpet comments on diva garb, since the twosome have been ditched by the TV Guide channel.
