Sixteen Candles

Before he was famous, tenor Juan Diego Flórez was already puppylicious. Here at at age 16 he sings a pop song on a 1989 televised music festival. (La Cieca can’t quite make up her mind if he reminds her more of Duckie in Pretty in Pink or Slater from Saved by the Bell.)

It’s nice to see that the garish, strident Eighties-style makeup and clothing were not unique to English-speaking cultures. Ah, how innocent we were back then.

Why, I never knew JDF started his career with Menudo.

Anyone know the legal age in Peru? :)

    Three words come to mind:

    Papi, Papi, Papi!

(Incidently, those words still ring true for our papi-licious Rossini tenor.)

Oh man…I really want to see young JDF in some kind of early 90s “last days of high school” romp, in which he plays the hot but quiet foreign exchange student who no one really gets until he and the slightly awkward best friend of the main girl have to spend time alone and he tells her about things in “in my country” and sings her a beautiful song which makes her heart melt and then they go to prom together and he gets up on stage and sings a really hot Latin song of uncertain provenance that involves a keytar and saxophone and all the suburban kids learn what dancing really is and feel stoked about going off to college and staying in touch with all their friends.

P.S. That is A.C. Slater all the way…

this is to be remembered next time we make fun of Spanish shows on TV again. We never truly know where real talent might come from.
