Give me my robe…

La Cieca has just heard that the 2007 Richard Tucker Award winner is tenor Brandon Jovanovich, pictured here at a concert given recently in honor of long-time Tucker colleague Eleanor Steber.

Career Grant winners for 2007 are Meredith Arwady, contralto; Jason Collins, tenor; and Stephen Costello, tenor. La Cieca regrets to inform you that she does not have any photos of Mr. Costello in a towel at the moment, but, after all, summer is just around the corner.

I have seen and heard Jovvavnovich twice: once as Don José, once as Cavaradossi in a more provincial theatre in Europe. He was Ok in the Don José, but a bit strained in the upper notes. He was very dissapointing as Cavaradossi: sometimes unaudible, he doesn’t sound Italian and no squillo. (The Vittoria! in act 2 was not exciting at all! Ah, I remember Fabio Armiliato singin this role. He looks better too…)

he’s supposed to sing Turiddu at NYCO next season. we shall find out…

By the way, he IS straight, and he CAN sing. Someone made a comment about trouble with high notes, and that’s a little true – he definitely needs to work for them, but it’s because he has a slightly baritonal voice – think Placido (he doesn’t sound anything like Placido, but the physicis are the same). The voice is HUGE and gorgeous, and he’s a wonderful actor, and most deserving of this honor. Go Brandon!!

  • Ariosto says:

Maybe it depends on the role he sings, but he didn’t impress me (yet). Who knows how his voice develops. Maybe he wasn’t ready for the Puccini, because he definitly needs working on the upper notes.

  • Daniel says:

Oh I’m mightily impressed already- and to think he can sing too! :)

It is a shame but Brandon is definitely straight. He and his wife have 3 adorable children. I get absolutely NO gay vibe from him. On top of being THAT gorgeous (and tall, swoon), he sings really well, is a strong actor, and is one of the nicest people working in the business. His isn’t an “Italianate” sound – but it is a wonderful voice. He is the real deal and worth seeing/hearing.

Yes yes yes. I saw him in Flight, and wished I was the stewardess he was busy gettin busy with. Hot and heavy and manly.

  • Daniel says:

Sounds like a job for a Qantas Stewardess :)
