Well done La Cieca, I knew you wouldn't let all us Crespin fans down. I am looking in vain for any sort of trubute on French TV tonight (I live in France), typical.

What is this delightful little bon-bon? I don't recognize it. Thank you for showing us a different side of Crespin--I know she did a lot of interesting (French) repertoire that we don't see much of in this country. I grew up on the Solti Walküre and have always associated her with that rep (in which she's glorious); This was a delight. Bon anniversaire, Mme. Crespin!

I believe it's Offenbach-- La Grand Duchesse de Gerolstein.

It's from "The Grand Duchess." The "I love soldiers" aria.

OMG what a coincidence. I know it's her birthday today, so I put on her legendary 1963 recording of Berlioz's Les Nuits d'été. It is heavenly. Her voice is like mac and cheese, it's a reliable comfort food. Happy Birthday, Madame Crespin!

I can still remember the sheer visceral impact of her exit line in ROSENKAVALIER the year of her debut. Without any sense of strain or effort, she arched "In Gottes Namen" high over the orchestra, throughout the old Met, enveloping us with that clear but sensuous voice that I and others still swear was bigger than any sound even the great Nilsson ever produced.

Bonne anniversaire, chere Regine!

There is a tribute to her, Die Fledermaus, on RadioFrance.

This is on FranceMusique, which has one of the WORST websites known to man. As far as I can tell they will be doing this before the Met Eugene Onegin and during the intervals.
